Philadelphia vs Miami Probable Pitchers

The Phillies enter play on Thursday occupying the NL’s second Wild Card spot comfortably. They’re 4.5 games clear of the Brewers, who are on the outside looking in, and 2.5 games ahead of the Padres, who hold the last playoff position.

Philadelphia has seen its World Series odds shorten to +3000, and Noah Syndergaard will be tasked with trying to put them in position for their six straight win. Syndergaard has been very hittable lately, yielding 24 hits and 12 runs over his past 16 innings.

Fortunately for Phillies backers, the matchup is about as favorable as it gets. Miami features a putrid lineup – more on that later, while Syndergaard has historically fared very well against the Marlins. Thor is 7-2 all-time versus Miami, with a 2.30 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and a 10.3 K/BB rate.

Syndergaard vs Lopez Stats

Noah Syndergaard
VS
Pablo Lopez
9-9 Record 8-10
4.09 ERA 4.04
1.28 WHIP 1.24
.267 OBA .243
3.8 SO/W Ratio 3.1

The Marlins will counter with Pablo Lopez in Thursday’s MLB lineups. The 26-year-old has pitched well in spurts this season, but is extremely gettable. Take his last outing for example. Lopez coughed up 10 hits and eight runs to the Mets in only 3.2 innings. He’s failed to make it past the 4th inning in back-t-back starts, and has yielded five or more runs four times over his past 10 appearances.

He pitched well versus the Phillies in his lone start back in April, but that hasn’t been the case over his career. Philadelphia batters are hitting .333 off him over 54 at-bats, with a 1.054 OPS.

Phillies vs Marlins Betting Trends

Last year’s winner in the NL MVP odds Bryce Harper is 5-for-13 lifetime against Lopez, and has clubbed two home runs over his past four outings.

The Phillies enter play having scored 28 runs during their five-game streak, and are slashing .301/.355/.503 over the past two weeks. They rank top-six in MLB in scoring, slugging and OPS.

Unfortunately, they won’t be completely healthy on Thursday. Slugger Nick Castellanos remains on the IL with an oblique injury, while 28-homer man Rhys Hoskins has a bone bruise on his hand.

Miami meanwhile, has been held to only two runs so far this series. It marks the fifth and sixth time over the last week they’ve failed to reach four runs in an outing, while for the season Pittsburgh is the only NL club that scores less often.

Just three players on the roster have reached double-digit home runs in 2022, and no one has eclipsed 14. To make matters worse, Jazz Chisholm Jr, the team leader in WAR, is done for the season.

Phillies vs Marlins Pick

Even without two of their sluggers, this Phillies team is head and shoulders above Miami from a talent perspective. Add to the fact that Lopez is struggling, while no team in the NL is hotter than Philadelphia at the moment and we have an easy decision.

Not only have the Phillies won eight of their past 10 versus the Marlins, they’ve also outscored them by 22 runs along the way. Philadelphia’s a full five games over .500 on the road, while Miami is 15 games below .500 at home.

Pick: Philadelphia Phillies Moneyline (-140)
