Following a wild 12-inning game the night before, the visiting Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves play the finale of their three-game series at 7:05pm ET at Truist Park.

Aaron Nola (3-1, 2.89 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Phillies and is favored against Huascar Ynoa (3-1, 2.36).

The Braves (16-17) ended the Phillies’ five-game winning streak with an 8-7 win on Saturday night. The Phillies (18-16) scored three runs in the top of the 12th and the Braves countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning for their fourth win in the last five games.

The Phillies won the series opener 12-2 on Friday night.

Atlanta Braves +100 +1.5 (-175) Under 8 (-118)

Odds as of May 9th

Nola is a Workhorse

It would not be surprising if Nola is at least a bit fatigued when he takes the mound.

Nola threw a season-high 114 pitches in six innings in his last outing. That came Tuesday in a win over the Milwaukee Brewers when he allowed one run and five hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

In three of his last four starts, Nola has thrown at least 101 pitches.

Nola has worked at least six innings in each of those four outings, going 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA. In all, he has averaged 6.2 innings in his seven outings this season.

This will mark Nola’s second start against the Braves. He did not factor in the decision on opening day April 1 when he gave up two runs in 6.2 innings.

Nola is 11-6 with a 3.03 ERA in 21 career starts against the Braves. However, he is 2-4 with a 3.97 ERA in eight starts at Truist Park.

Braves Career Stats vs Nola

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG

Freddie Freeman 48 11 1 9 5 .229
Marcell Ozuna 33 10 3 7 13 .303

Austin Riley 15 4 2 2 2 .267
Dansby Swanson 27 4 0 0 6 .148
William Contreras 0 0 0 0 0
Cristian Pache 4 1 0 0 2 .250

Braves manager Brian Snitker is hopeful of having right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. in the lineup. Acuna, who is tied for the MLB lead with 10 home runs, left Saturday’s game after sustaining a bruised left pinkie when hit by a pitch from Sam Coonrod.

First baseman Freddie Freeman looks to heat up after snapping a 0-for-22 skid Saturday with a home run off Vince Velasquez. It was the longest hitless streak of the 2020 National League MVP’s career.

Ynoa the Braves’ Ohtani

Unlike the Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani, the Braves’ Huascar Ynoa is not a two-way player. However, the 22-year-old is sure making an impact as both a pitcher and hitter this season.

Ynoa has gained more notice with his bat than his arm lately by hitting home runs in each of his last two starts, including a grand slam off the Washington Nationals’ Tanner Rainey on Tuesday.

Ynoa is 5-for-8 with a double and six RBIs in his past three games.

Ynoa has been good at his day job as a pitcher. He has allowed two runs or fewer in five of his six starts.

In his last outing against the Nationals, Ynoa won his third straight start. He gave up only one unearned run on four hits in seven innings while striking out four and walking two.

During his winning streak, Ynoa has allowed just two earned runs in 18.2 innings for a 0.98 ERA.

Ynoa has made one start and three relief appearances against the Phillies in his nascent career and is 0-0i with a 2.45 ERA.

Phillies Career Stats vs Ynoa

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG
Andrew McCutchen 1 0 0 0 0 .000
Rhys Hoskins 3 1 0 0 1 .333
Bryce Harper 2 0 0 0 0 .000

Didi Gregorius 2 0 0 0 0 .000
Jean Segura 3 0 0 0 1 .000
Odubel Herrera 0 0 0 0 0

Phillies second baseman Jean Segura had four hits Friday night after being activated from the injured list, then added three more Saturday night to raise his batting average to .391. Segura has four 4-hit games since joining the Phillies in 2019, the most of any player on the team over the last three seasons.

The Phillies have scored at least five runs in four of their last five games and 30 runs total in that span.

One Nutty Game

Ehire Adrianza the Braves’ comeback Saturday night with a game-ending RBI single in the 12th inning.

Atlanta overcame deficits of 3-1 in the ninth and 4-3 in the 11th before rallying from a 7-4 hole in the 12th.

William Contreras tied it at 7 with a three-run double off Enyel De Los Santos before scoring on Adrianza’s hit. Contreras’ rip scored designated runner Ozzie Albies along with Austin Riley, who walked, and Dansby Swanson, who singled.

It’s hard to image Sunday night’s game being quite so wild.  So let’s hope Ynoa provides another highlight with the bat and give him a lean at tasty odds.
