Hill’s Ks Are Too High

It’s not often you get the chance to bet against a 42-year-old pitcher, but that’s the case on Tuesday in the Red Sox vs Tigers odds. Rich Hill is back for his second tour of duty with Boston, and despite a favorable matchup against the light-hitting Tigers, 4.5 strikeouts is too high for the journeyman left-hander.

Hill’s K/9 rate has fallen below 8.6 in each of the past two seasons, while his swinging strike percentage was below 10% for the second consecutive year in 2021. He tops out below 89mph with his fastball, and is forced to rely on a variety of off-speed pitches to get batters out.

Now well into his 40’s, there’s serious questions about how long he can last in any given start. He barely beat out Garrett Whitlock for the team’s final starting rotation spot, and with Boston having just one win in four games so far, Red Sox manager Alex Cora will likely have little patience with Hill if he gets off to a rocky start.

Pick: Rich Hill Under 4.5 Strikeouts (-112)

Reynolds Goes Deep

Pittsburgh outfielder Bryan Reynolds is off to a slow start in 2022, but that could change today. Reynolds and the Pirates face Drew Smyly and the Cubs, a pitcher he’s had a great deal of success against in the past.

Reynolds has taken Smyly deep twice in 11 career at-bats, and cranked a career-high 24 home runs in 2021.

Smyly has had trouble keeping the ball in the yard throughout his career, but it’s been a major problem over his past two full seasons. In 2019, he yielded 2.53 home runs per 9 innings, while in 2021 that number dipped but only to 1.92 dingers per 9 innings.

Reynolds, a switch-hitter, will face Smyly from the right side of the plate which is where you want to attack the veteran hurler. Smyly surrenders a career .455 slugging percentage to right-handed batters, compared to only a .403 slugging percentage to left-handed batters.

Pick: Bryan Reynolds Home Run (+490)
