Baseball’s most storied rivalry is back under the lights on Sunday Night Baseball, for the third and final game of this weekend’s three-game set.

So far the series has been light on offense, but that’s been a common theme in recent Yankees (37-28, 20-16 home) games thanks to a few key injuries.

New York will be shorthanded once again versus the Red Sox (32-32, 15-16 away) on Sunday, but that didn’t stop online sportsbooks from pegging them as the home chalk in the MLB odds.

Boston vs New York Probable Pitchers

New York, a top-five World Series odds contender, will give the ball to Clarke Schmidt. The 27-year-old has eaten up the second most innings on the roster as the team’s number five starter, and has been effective since the start of May, albeit against inferior competition.

Schmidt has allowed two runs or less in five of his last seven starts, shutting down the weak opponents he’s faced, while struggling against the stronger lineups. He had little trouble with the underwhelming bats of the Mariners, Reds, A’s and Guardians, but when the Rays got a hold of him it got ugly.

Tampa Bay tagged him for seven runs last month, while Schmidt also fared poorly against the Rangers, Blue Jays and Angels earlier in the season.

The Boston regulars in the MLB starting lineups rank sixth in scoring, which could be a problem for Schmidt. The Red Sox also hit righties harder than lefties, as we’ll discuss, and have had decent success against Schmidt in limited action.

Boston will counter with Brayan Bello, who’s flashed strong form over his last seven starts. He’s yielded more than two earned runs only once during that stretch, despite facing the big bats of the Blue Jays, Angels and Braves.

Bello went up against Tampa Bay in his latest outing, surrendering three runs over 6 solid innings. He fanned five batters against only one walk, and has the luxury of now facing New York without two of its top hitters.

Red Sox vs Yankees Predictions

The Yankees will once again be without the services of AL MVP odds contender Aaron Judge, as well as Harrison Bader. Judge is dealing with a sprained toe and is on the injured list, while a hamstring injury has Bader on the IL as well.

Judge has been out of commission since last Saturday, and it appears he took New York’s mojo with him. Entering play on Saturday, the Yankees are 2-3 without their slugger, averaging only three runs per game. They’re slashing a dismal .194/.251/.403 over the last week, striking out on 26% of their at-bats.

Sticking on the injury front, Giancarlo Stanton returned from injury earlier this month after a six week absence, but his bat has done more harm than good. Stanton is 3-for-20 since returning, with only one hit in his last 13 at-bats.

The Red Sox meanwhile, are slumping as well, losing 12 of 18. They’ve been held to three runs or less seven times in their last eight contests, including twice in two games this series.

They’ve hit only four home runs in their last eight games, but there should be optimism they can bounce back versus Schmidt. For starters, 53 of Boston’s 69 home runs have come against righties. The regulars in their lineup have faced Schmidt 13 times, taking him deep twice.

The Red Sox bats are led by Rafael Devers, who’s been an absolute Yankee killer this year. Devers is hitting .333 against the Bronx Bombers in 2023, going deep against them in back-to-back games. He’s now homered versus New York eight times since the start of last year, which is more dingers than he’s hit against anyone else.
