  • Colorado’s Connor Seabold is winless in seven career starts, with an 8.10 ERA
  • Don’t miss the Rockies vs Pirates predictions, odds, probable pitchers, and picks

The Pirates offense is in a major funk. They’ve scored two runs or less in eight straight, losing seven of those contests. Their lone win during that stretch came Monday versus the Rockies, and the two will hook up for Game 2 of their three-game set on Tuesday.

Online sportsbooks are bullish on Pittsburgh stringing back-to-back wins together in the MLB odds, and also expect an end to their offensive struggles. That’s because Colorado is sending Connor Seabold to the mound, who’s been a punching bag in his short major league career.

Colorado vs Pittsburgh Probable Pitchers

Seabold couldn’t keep the ball in the yard in his brief two-year tenure in Boston, and is having similar problems in his first season in Colorado. The 27-year-old has coughed up four home runs already in only 18 innings, and a total of 25 hits and 11 runs.

Last time out, he allowed three homers to the Brewers over 5 innings, and has now surrendered 10 home runs in 40 career innings of work. He boasts a lifetime 8.10 ERA in 14 appearances, and an opponent slash line of .360/.421/.646.

He has a minimal amount of history with the Pittsburgh batters in the MLB starting lineups, but on paper he looks like the perfect cure to their woeful form.

Seabold vs Ortiz (2022) Stats

Connor Seabold
VS
Luis Ortiz
0-0 Record 0-2
5.30 ERA 4.50
1.50 WHIP 1.12
.321 OBA .136
4.7 SO/W Ratio 1.7

The Pirates meanwhile, will counter with Luis Ortiz. The 24-year-old was recalled from Triple-A on Monday, where he was enjoying a fine start to the season. Ortiz is 2-1 with a 2.23 ERA in seven appearances so far, striking out 29 and walking 11.

He made four starts last season as a rookie with Pittsburgh, posting mixed results. Opponents managed just a .136 average off him, but his command was all over the map. He surrendered 10 walks in 16 innings of work, which offset his 19 strikeouts.

Despite his control issues, he yielded one earned run or less in each of his first three starts, before being tagged for six runs in less than an inning by the Cardinals in his season finale.

Rockies vs Pirates Betting Notes

Ortiz gets a soft landing in his return to the Majors, as no team has more severe home/road splits than the Rockies (14-22, 7-13 away). At home, Colorado is the equivalent of an offensive juggernaut. They slash.291/.343/.453, with an .802 OPS. As visitors however, those numbers fall off a cliff.

They’re hitting .228 on the road so far, with a .298 OBP. They’ve scored 10 fewer runs away from home than at Coors Field, despite playing four more games. They mustered only four hits on Monday en route to getting blanked by Pittsburgh, with a lone extra-base hit.

The Pirates (21-15, 10-7 home) offense wasn’t much better in the series opener, producing only seven hits. Rodolfo Castro’s 7th inning two-run homer was all the runs they needed however, as Mitch Keller pitched a complete game gem.

Pittsburgh has been outscored 44-11 over its past eight contests, which has caused their lead atop the NL Central to shrink to one-game. Despite the horrific slump, they’re still well on their way to exceeding their projection in the MLB win totals. They’re also still plus-20 in run differential, which is better than all but three NL teams.

Colorado vs Pittsburgh Predictions

The matchup against Seabold couldn’t be anymore favorable for the Pirates. Once the righty exits the game, Pittsburgh is still in great shape against the Rockies bullpen. Colorado relievers own a bottom-10 ERA, and the fifth worst strand rate.

Rockies vs Pirates 2023 H2H Results

Date Away Team Home Team Result
May 8 Rockies Pirates PIT, 2-0
April 19 Pirates Rockies PIT, 14-3
April 18 Pirates Rockies PIT, 5-3
April 17 Pirates Rockies PIT, 14-3

These two teams also met earlier this season, with Pittsburgh crossing the plate 33 times over three games. Sure, that was in the thin Denver air, but they still outscored their opponent by 24 runs. They’ve now +26 in run differential against Colorado in four games, and given the Rockies struggles on the road coupled with their dreadful pitching, we should expect another Pirates W on Tuesday.

Pick: Pittsburgh Pirates Moneyline (-165)
