  • Seattle is a -170 moneyline favorite in the Tigers vs Mariners odds for Game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday at 6:10 pm ET at T-Mobile Park
  • Detroit turns to Eduardo Rodriguez (5-5, 4.02 ERA), while Seattle hands the ball to Marco Gonzales (10-15, 4.14 ERA)
  • Complete Tigers vs Mariners odds are below, along with a betting prediction

For the first time in 21 years, the Seattle Mariners (81-71, 43-34 home) are postseason bound. The M’s clinched their spot in the MLB playoff bracket over the weekend, but before the real October baseball begins, they must finish up a four-game set with the Detroit Tigers (65-93, 29-47 away).

Tuesday brings us a doubleheader between these two teams, and oddsmakers expect Seattle to prevail convincingly in Game 1, much like they did when they swept Detroit earlier this season.

Detroit vs Seattle Probable Pitchers

Seattle, which enters play with +2800 World Series odds, will give the ball to Marco Gonzales. The 30-year-old has the unfortunate honor of leading the AL in losses this season with 15, and that stat seems justified given his past three outings.

Gonzales has been rocked by Texas, KC and the LA Angels, not exactly a trio of juggernauts. He’s surrendered 21 hits and 13 runs over 16.1 innings, including six home runs. Keeping the ball in the park has been a major issue for him in 2022, as only three pitchers in MLB have coughed up more dingers.

Gonzales allowed seven hits and three runs in his lone meeting versus the Tigers this season, while Detroit batters have a .333 lifetime average against him over 54 at-bats.

Rodriguez vs Gonzales Stats

Eduardo Rodriguez
VS
Marco Gonzales
5-5 Record 10-15
4.02 ERA 4.14
1.34 WHIP 1.33
.246 OBA .270
2.0 SO/W Ratio 2.0

The Tigers will counter with Eduardo Rodriguez. The former Red Sox was won back-to-back starts and is fresh off 6.2 innings of shutout ball versus the Royals. He’s allowed three or fewer runs in seven of his past nine starts, but one of those outings in which he didn’t came against Seattle.

Rodriguez was roughed up for six hits, six runs and two homers in early September, lasting only 4 innings in a 7-0 loss. Current Mariners batters own a .286 average against him, with a .778 OPS over 84 at-bats.

Tigers vs Mariners Betting Trends

Rodriguez will have to deal with a reinforced Seattle lineup on Tuesday. Rookie All-Star outfielder and leadoff man Julio Rodriguez is back after a 10-day IL stint due to a sore back. Rodriguez leads the team in average, runs, slugging and OPS, and is one of six regulars with an OPS north of .725.

The Mariners rank above average in runs per game, slugging and OPS, and top-10 in home runs. They entered play on Monday winners of four of their last five outings, and are 18-11 against Central Division foes this season.

Detroit meanwhile, is playing its best baseball of the year. They’ve won 10 of 12, sweeping both KC and the Chicago White Sox, while posting series wins against Baltimore and Minnesota.

They have a plus-21 run differential over that stretch and are in the midst of one of their most productive offensive stretches of the season. The Tigers are slashing .259/.311/.395 over the last two weeks, numbers that dwarf their year long stats.

Tigers vs Mariners Pick

A 7 run total for this matchup is simply too low. Both teams are swinging the bats well at the moment, while neither pitcher has had much success against Tuesday’s opponent over their careers.

Each of the first three matchups between these two clubs this season produced at least seven runs, as have each of their past seven meetings dating back to 2021.

Typically it’s wise to target unders in Tigers games, as we did on Sunday, but this is one of those rare occasions where betting on offense in a Detroit contest should pay off.

Pick: Over 7 (-110)
