  • The Chicago White Sox are -165 home favorites over the New York Yankees in the finale of their three-game weekend American League series on Sunday, August 15
  • The set opened with the Field Of Dreams game on Thursday in Dyersville, Iowa
  • Read below for odds, analysis and a betting prediction

It took a baseball diamond carved out of a cornfield to bring a halt to the New York Yankees (64-52, 32-27 away) dominance over the Chicago White Sox (68-49, 39-21 home). However, just like MLB’s Field of Dreams game, it was only a temporary measure.

The Yanks returned to their winning ways over the ChiSox on Saturday in Chicago. They worked extra innings for a 7-5 verdict.

Overall, New York has now won six of seven from the ChiSox. At Chicago, the Yankees are winners of six of the last eight games.

Despite New York’s success story over the Windy City’s American League team, it’s Chicago that is being established as the -165 home favorite for Sunday’s series finale. The White Sox are 36-16 as a home favorite this season.

Cortes vs Giolito

0-1 Record 9-8
2.70 ERA 3.81
2.76 xERA 3.32
1.06 WHIP 1.10
3.54 SO/W Ratio 3.92

Lefty Nestor Cortes is with his fourth different big-league club in as many seasons. That includes a previous stint with the Yankees in 2019 when he was 5-1 with a 5.67 ERA.

Injuries to four of New York’s five starters are forcing Cortes into the rotation. This will be his fifth start over his last six appearances. He took the loss his last time out on August 10. Cortes allowed five runs, four earned, in 5.2 innings work during an 8-4 setback at Kansas City.

He’s worked at least five innings in each of his last three starts. Cortes has served up three homers over his past 10.2 innings on the mound. He struck out 15 while waking just three over his last four trips to the mound.

Cortes made his lone career appearance against the White Sox in Chicago on June 15, 2019. He got the win, working five innings of two-run relief during an 8-4 victory.

Lucas Giolito worked eight innings of two-hit, one-run ball during an 11-1 win at Minnesota in his last start. That ended his two-decision losing streak. The right-hander is 4-5 with a 3.73 at home this season.

Giolito is 2-1 in his career in three starts against the Yanks but with a 6.75 ERA.

White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu, shortstop Tim Anderson, designated hitter Eloy Jimenenz and utility man Leury Garcia are all 1-for-2 (.500) against Cortes.

Yankees DH Giancarlo Stanton has one hit in two career at-bats against Giolito but it was a doozy. Stanton crushed a grand slam off the White Sox pitcher on April 9, 2018.

Outfielder Luke Voit is 1-for-3 (.333) when facing Giolito, with a solo home run. Second baseman Rougned Odor is also 1-for-3 (.333) against Giolito with an RBI. First baseman DJ Lemahieu is 2-for-7 (2.86) and has driven in two runs.

Yankees vs White Sox Pick

New York has scored 32 runs over the past five games. The Bronx Bombers are 13-5 since July 28. Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge has clubbed three homers in this series.

Lefty Zach Britton, filling in for injured closer Aroldis Chapman, asked Yankees manager Aaron Boone to remove him from the role. Britton shows an ERA of  8.10 in four appearances as closer. He’s given up three earned runs over 3.1 innings pitched.

In his first stint as closer on Saturday, Chad Green surrendered a game-tying homer to Abreu. It was the MLB-leading 18th time this season that the Yanks have blown a lead in the 8th inning or later.

Pick: New York Yankees (+145)
