76ers vs Celtics Betting Trends

Philadelphia and Boston enter play ranked fifth and first respectively in the NBA Championship odds. The Celtics have been the leaders of the pack for virtually the entire season, but lately have hit a bit of a lull.

They’ve won just three of their past seven games, posting pedestrian offensive numbers along the way. Boston ranks 23rd in offensive rating during that stretch, putting up five fewer points than their season long average. A big reason for the lack of efficiency has been injuries. Second leading scorer Jaylen Brown sat out their last game with an illness, while starting point guard Marcus Smart hasn’t played since January 21st.

Smart (ankle) is still without a timetable for his return, while Brown is probable for Wednesday’s contest. One area of Boston’s game that hasn’t relented is the Celtics play in their own end. They rank fifth in defensive rating over this latest 3-4 stretch, just one spot lower than their season long rank.

Not everyone on the roster has struggled offensively. Jayson Tatum enters play ranked fourth in the NBA in scoring, splashing at least 30 points in 11 of his past 14 games. He’s a top-five NBA MVP odds contender, as is Philly’s Joel Embiid.

The Process is dealing with foot soreness and is currently listed as questionable. However, he’s been questionable prior to most of the Sixers recent games with the same injury and continues to start and perform at an elite level.

Embiid has racked up six straight double-doubles and is averaging 34 points per night over his last 13 outings. Philly is 10-3 during that stretch, posting six victories of nine or more points.

After dealing with numerous injuries to nearly all of their starting five at one point this season, the 76ers have been mostly healthy so far in 2023. That good health has led to some impressive ball, as they’ve won nine of their last 11. The only two losses in that stretch were to Orlando and New York, and they blew a 21-point lead in both of those contests.

For the season they rank top-seven in both offensive and defensive rating, one of only two teams who can say that. The other, is their opponent on Wednesday.

76ers vs Celtics Predictions

Philadelphia boasts the league’s third best cover rate and has beaten the spread in six of its past nine outings. They’re one of only six teams in the league with a winning road record, and are 8-5 ATS this season as underdogs, with seven outright victories.

Boston meanwhile, is 2-7 against the spread in its last nine games. They’ve failed to cover in six of their past eight home games, and have just a 28.5% cover rate since Smart went down.

NBA Top ATS Record

Team ATS Record
OKC Thunder 32-20-1
Orlando Magic 31-23-1
Philadelphia 76ers 29-22-1
Milwaukee Bucks 29-22-1
Boston Celtics 28-26-0

As long as Embiid plays, and the 4.5-point spread indicates he will, Philly is a value here. They’re playing as well as anyone in the league, and have the firepower and defensive prowess to matchup with the Celtics. Take the points in this matchup of marquee Eastern Conference foes.

Pick: Philadelphia 76ers +4.5 (-110)
