At some point, the new-look Chicago Bulls will find some time to gel.

In the meantime, their relentless schedule takes them into the Valley of the Sun, against a Phoenix squad that has been business since the end of January.

The Bulls, currently in the final play-in spot in the Eastern Conference, are 7-point underdogs in this one.

Phoenix is in pursuit of the Utah Jazz for first in the West, while trying to fend off the Clippers, who sit in third behind the Suns by a half-game.

All-Around Hot Suns

After a mediocre 8-8 start, Phoenix has put it together, ripping off 26 wins in their last 32 games, vaulting them into second in the West. Their latest run has them winners of six of seven, though they haven’t come easy lately.

The Suns’ last three wins have all been by seven points or less. Their offense seized to nearly blow a big lead against the Raptors, they needed overtime to fend off the LaMelo-less Hornets, before holding off a late Hawks rally on Tuesday night.

Devin Booker led the way against Atlanta with 21 points, three rebounds and three assists, while Chris Paul chipped in with 12 points and eight dimes. Third-year big man DeAndre Ayton had 13 points and 14 rebounds. He ranks ninth in the NBA this year at 11 boards a game.

As a team, Phoenix gets it done on both ends of the floor. They’re just outside the top-10 in scoring, but they rank second in assists per game, and have the sixth-highest effective field-goal percentage. They also commit the fifth-fewest turnovers in the league. Defensively, the Suns are third in points allowed per game (107.1), while limiting teams to a paltry 34.1% mark from deep, which ranks second in the NBA.

Bulls Getting the Horns

On an individual level, prized trade deadline pickup Nikola Vucevic has been great, posting 21 points and nine rebounds in both Bulls games he’s played, while shooting an impressive 18-for-29 (62%) from the floor. Unfortunately, they’ve both come in double-digit losses to the Spurs and Warriors.

The Bulls have dropped four straight, and face an impossible upcoming slate: in Phoenix, at Utah and home to Brooklyn. That could send the Bulls tumbling out of the top-10 in the East.

If they plan to turn things around, it will likely have to come at the defensive end: the Bulls have gone 4-9 in March, and in those nine losses they’ve surrendered 115.7 points a game, higher than their already-troublesome overall season mark of 113.9 and would rank them in the bottom-4 in the NBA.

They also need to take care of the ball better. Chicago turned the ball over 20 times in their last game against Golden State, and they cough it up at an NBA-worst 16 times a game.

What’s the Best Bet?

Vucevic and Zach LaVine, sixth in NBA scoring at 27.5 points per game, should figure things out soon enough, but this learn-on-the-fly against the titans of the league is not going to help. Neither is an unhealthy LaVine, who’s dealing with an ankle injury.

 

Even with a healthy LaVine, it’s hard to go against the Suns. They’re 21-8 ATS at home this year, and they’ve covered ATS five out of six games this year when playing on zero nights rest.

While the total hasn’t been published yet, play the under. Seven of the last nine Bulls games have gone below the total, as have five of the last six Suns games. In four of the last five games the teams have played in Phoenix, the game finished under as well, including their first meeting this season, a 106-97 Suns win on Feb 26.
