  • Kawhi Leonard averaged 26.6 points and 7.3 rebounds in 60 games during the 2018-19 season
  • Paul George averaged 28.0 points and 8.2 rebounds in 77 games during the 2018-19 season
  • George won’t see a regular season game until November due to injury

One of the NBA’s most anticipated duos of the 2019-20 season consisting of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, are teamed up with the Los Angeles Clippers this season. Both players are coming off amazing seasons, as Kawhi took home Finals MVP, and Paul George came in third in MVP voting.

While they won’t share the court for a while as George continues recovering from offseason surgery, both have championship aspirations in their first season as teammates, and are in for big years.

Can Kawhi’s Star Keep Shining?

Kawhi Leonard had an unbelievable postseason last year. After many going back and forth over the load management situation the Raptors and Kawhi put together, he didn’t disappoint in the playoffs. But during his 60 regular season games, he still put up All-Star numbers, recording 26.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game.

Now everyone is wondering if he is able to do that while sharing the court with fellow Californian Paul George.

There’s no reason to not expect Leonard to put up the same type of numbers as last year. With Paul George out for at least the first 10 games of the season, Kawhi will have to take the lead on most, including points and rebounds.

But once George is back, Kawhi should be the one who focuses on scoring and setting other players up, while George should crash the boards. It’s going to take George a few games to get his scoring back, so having an effect defensively is where his strength will be right away.

But the last two out of three seasons, which included the season he played nine games, he averaged over 24.5 points, so the over is appealing here. But prior to last season, the last time Kawhi averaged more than 6.5 rebounds a game was 2015-16, so the under is definitely more appealing here. Basketball reference’s current projection for Kawhi is 7.4 rebounds and 27.2 points per 36 minutes.

With Kawhi most likely taking on the lion’s share of the scoring, George may look to be more of a rebounder and defensive presence.

It is certainly possible that he’ll average more than 6.5 rebounds per game. Basketball reference’s projection for the season is that he’ll average 7.1 rebounds and 24.9 points per 36 minutes.
