  • James Harden will miss the next month with a right foot tendon strain, while Joel Embiid is questionable (illness)

The 76ers (4-5, 1-3 home) lost a lot more than just a game on Wednesday versus Washington. James Harden suffered a right foot tendon strain, and is now expected to be out a month.

Philadelphia had already been playing without superstar big man Joel Embiid for the past two games due to an illness, and there’s no guarantee he’ll be suiting up on Friday versus the Knicks (3-4, 0-3 away).

Despite the injury concerns, oddsmakers still thought enough of the Sixers, or perhaps so little of New York, that they opened Philadelphia as the chalk in the NBA odds for this divisional clash.

Philadelphia 76ers Betting Analysis

Harden finished Wednesday’s 121-11 loss to the Wizards, posting a stat line of 24 points and 10 assists, doing his best to shoulder the offensive burden without Embiid.

There was no indication that night he’d been hurt, but on Thursday afternoon the news broke about his injury. Harden’s loss is incredibly significant, as he’s leading the team in assists, while ranking second in rebounds and PER, and third in points.

Without Harden, and possibly Embiid, the offense will only go as far as Tyrese Maxey can take them. The third-year guard is averaging a career-best 24 points per game, and scored a team-high 32 last time out versus Washington.

The 76ers trailed the Wiz for the final 42 minutes of the game, yielding a 58% opponent field goal percentage. The 121 points is the most they’ve allowed since opening night, and the loss snapped a three-game winning streak.

Back to Embiid, whose non-COVID illness has now sidelined him the entire week. The top-five NBA MVP odds contender is currently questionable for Friday’s game, but hasn’t practiced since last playing on Saturday.

New York Knicks Betting Analysis

New York also enters play off a loss, although they tasted defeat in a much more humiliating fashion. The Knicks blew a 23 point lead to an Atlanta team that lost superstar Trae Young for over a quarter midway through the game.

They wound up falling 112-99, and once again their offense struggled. New York shot just 41% from the field and 28% from three, failing to reach 100 points for the first time all season, and falling short of 109 points for the third straight outing.

The Knicks currently rank 12th in points per game and 13th in offensive rating, but those numbers are heavily skewed by a pair of 130+ efforts versus Charlotte and Detroit, two of the worst defenses in the league.

Not a single player on the New York roster averages 20 points per game, with Jalen Brunson leading the way at 18.4 ppg.

Defensively, the Knicks are quite strong, ranking 10th in defensive rating, and second in enemy field goal percentage. The one glaring concern however, is their play on the glass. New York is surrendering a league-high 14.4 offensive rebounds, which can lead to plenty of second chance opportunities.

Knicks vs 76ers Prediction

That will be a huge issue if Embiid plays, but if the Process sits again, fire up the Knicks on the moneyline. Philadelphia is 63-85 all-time in games that Embiid sits, and dropped a 103-96 decision to New York in the lone game he missed between them last season.

The Sixers averaged four fewer points without Embiid last season, while shooting just 45% from the field. They were fortunate to have Harden for the contests he sat out this season, but without their two best players, Philly is a vulnerable team, especially at the offensive end.

Pick: New York Knicks Moneyline (+126) – If Embiid is ruled out
