Battered and bruised, the Suns (9-6, 7-1 home) return home on Sunday afternoon to battle the Knicks (8-8, 4-5 away). Phoenix is missing a handful of key players including Chris Paul, but that didn’t stop oddsmakers from pegging them as the sizeable chalk in the NBA odds.

The Suns are currently 6-point favorites, in a contest that features a total of 226. Early money is almost exclusively on Phoenix, as they’re drawing 88% of the spread handle and 77% of the spread bets. Bettors are also banking on a high scoring game, as 93% of the over/under handle is backing the over.

Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 pm ET at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, AZ, a building where the Suns are 7-1 this season.

Phoenix Suns Betting Analysis

Paul was on the sidelines on Friday night when Phoenix lost a 134-133 decision in Utah. The Suns trailed by as many as 19 in the first half, but fought all the way and even grabbed the lead in the final frame. It was a 1 point game in the final minute before Lauri Markkanen buried a dagger jumper to put the Jazz up for good, wasting a 49 point, 10 assist effort from Devin Booker.

The top-12 NBA MVP odds contender scored 45 points through the first three quarters, but faltered down the stretch along with his teammates. Phoenix shot 58% from the field through the first 36 minutes, but made just 10 of 27 shots in the fourth en route to defeat.

Phoenix fell to 2-3 without Paul this season, and have dropped three of four games overall. Their defense has struggled without him, and Friday’s game was no exception. The Suns allowed the Jazz to shoot 56% from the field and 52% from three.

Phoenix has surrendered 113+ points in each game Paul has missed, and is allowing 122 points per contest over their last three outings.

Paul’s injury isn’t the only one affecting the Suns in their own end. The team is also without Jae Crowder, who’s an excellent defender, as well as rotational players Landry Shamet and Cam Johnson.

The absences may be hurting them on defense, but the Phoenix offense is still cooking. The Suns rank third in offensive rating, and top-10 in scoring, field goal percentage and three-point efficiency.

New York Knicks Betting Analysis

New York meanwhile, will play the fourth game of a five game road trip on Sunday. The Knicks are 2-1 on the trip so far, beating Utah and Denver before losing in Golden State on Friday.

New York fell 111-101 to the Dubs, in large part due to some atrocious shooting. Facing one of the weakest defenses in the league statistically, the Knicks shot just 34.5% from the field and 26% from three. They missed their first 10 triples of the game, and would have been blown out if not for a 32 of 34 performance from the charity stripe.

Julius Randle led the way offensively with 20 points, two nights after pouring in 34 against the Nuggets. R.J. Barrett chipped in 18 points, while Jalen Brunson managed 13 points in spite of a woeful 2 of 13 performance from the field.

The Knicks enter play ranked below league average in most offensive categories, and rank 29th in three-point efficiency. Defensively they’ve underwhelmed so far, and aren’t playing like a typical Tom Thibodeau team. New York ranks 22nd in defensive rating, and 21st in opponent points allowed.

On the injury front, starting center Mitchell Robinson (knee) is questionable, as is forward Cam Reddish (groin).

Knicks vs Suns Prediction

The Knicks sloppy defense is part of the reason why bettors are hammering the over ahead of Sunday’s matchup with Phoenix.

New York has allowed at least 111 points in seven of their past nine games, and in two of the first three outings on this road trip. Their offense has been able to overcome the lousy defense twice this week already, and is in a prime spot to put up a big number against this hurting Suns squad.

Phoenix Without Chris Paul This Season

Date Opponent Result
11/09/2022 MIN W 129-117
11/11/2022 ORL L 114-97
11/14/2022 MIA L 113-112
11/16/2022 GSW W 130-119
11/18/2022 UTA L 134-133

Phoenix simply isn’t the same defensive team without Paul and his injured teammates. The five games he’s missed have produced an average of 239.5 points, with four of the five clearing the total.

Pick: Over 226 (-110).
