Simmons Gets It Done

The Sixers have a rest advantage over the Kings, who beat Boston on Friday. Philly is still without Joel Embiid. The offensive burden on Tobias Harris and Ben Simmons is much greater, but the pair have stepped up with the MVP candidate sidelined.

Harris and Simmons not only had a chance to rest while Sacramento was playing Boston, they also get to face one of the league’s worst defenses. The Kings are 28th in defensive rating over their last 10. Simmons is coming off a triple-double against the Milwaukee Bucks, and is playing arguably the best two-way basketball of his career.

Only seven players create more points off their assists. This is a better return than Simmons’ pure assist numbers because he creates so many open three-point looks. The Kings rank 28th in opponent three-point shooting percentage. Simmons should rack up some three-point dimes on Saturday.

Sacramento is dead-last in transition defense. Philly is up to ninth in pace since Embiid’s injury. They will push the ball far more frequently, and Simmons will be the hub of that. This is a great matchup for him as both a scorer and a playmaker – the Kings’ do not have a player to guard him, assuming Harrison Barnes is left on Harris.

Simmons averages nearly 18 points and over nine assists per 36 minutes when Embiid is off the court. If this game stays close, the 2016 first overall pick should play well over 30 minutes against one of the league’s worst defenses. This is set to be another big night for Philly’s much-criticized All-Star.

Pick: Ben Simmons over 26.5 points and assists (-120)

LaMelo Topples Clippers

Slumping after the All-Star break, the Clippers are 4-6 and 22nd in defensive rating over their last 10. They face a Charlotte team sitting 12th in offense over that span. Teams are shooting over 40% from three against the Clippers in this poor run, which bodes well for a Hornets team ranking eighth in three-point makes per game. LaMelo Ball is averaging two made threes per contest and assisting on many more.

Averaging 16 points per contest, the 17.5 line might seem generous. Ball’s numbers since being put into the starting line-up are more impressive, however. He’s at 19.8 points per contest, shooting over 43% from beyond the arc, and recording 6.4 assists. The 2020 third overall pick has passed 17.5 points in eight of his last 11 games.

His assist numbers have been consistent, too. Only once since March 5th has he recorded fewer than four assists in a game. Ball has already scored 20 or more 14 times this season, and registered five or more assists in 30 games.

The Clippers play slow. That’ll restrict the possessions for Ball to put up big numbers. They have elite defensive talent which could trouble him, but their performances of late have been unimpressive on the defensive end. Ty Lue has seen his team blown out by the Pelicans and Mavericks since the break.

Ball put up 26 points and seven assists against the Lakers a couple of days ago. Both his points and assists props represent value on their own, but combining them looks like the best bet.

Pick: LaMelo Ball over 23.5 points and assists (-104)
