Pick #1: Cavaliers vs 76ers

Cleveland kicks off their preseason with a tough matchup against the 76ers. The Cavaliers of course had a very busy summer and could end up being one of the best teams in the East if it all comes together after they acquired star guard Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz. Alongside Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen, this group has four potential All-Stars in their starting lineup. Wednesday will be a first glance at all of them together, with the exception of Mobley, who is nursing an ankle injury.

Philly looked solid in their first preseason game, beating the Nets 127-108. What’s even more impressive is that both Joel Embiid and James Harden didn’t even play. They’ll both rest again here, too. Tyrese Maxey showed out against Brooklyn, pouring in 20 points in just 13 minutes of action. He’ll be the leading man with the star duo sitting after a very impressive 2021-22 campaign. The Sixers were absolutely dominant on the boards, outrebounding the Nets 56-43. If Doc Rivers’ squad can control the glass on Wednesday, it could go in their favor.

The 76ers have won five in a row versus Cleveland. This is the first game of the Mitchell era and it will take a few outings before really finding their groove together. I like Philly to win this one in the NBA Preseason picks.

Pick: 76ers -4.5 (110)

Pick #2: Suns vs Lakers

Pacific Division foes meet on Wednesday as the Suns visit the Lakers. This is Phoenix’s second contest after an embarrassing 134-124 loss to Australia’s Adelaide 36ers on Sunday. Monty Williams’ squad literally played all their starters yet couldn’t beat the NBL club. Deandre Ayton, Mikal Bridges, and Cam Payne all finished with 20+ points apiece, but the Suns shot just 26% from downtown. Adelaide meanwhile, drained 24 triples for a 56% clip. That was the difference-maker. Phoenix is still at +1000 in the 2023 NBA Championship odds, though.

The Lakers certainly won’t be pleased with their first game either, losing by 30 points to the Sacramento Kings. Yes, the entire rotation played even minutes, but regardless, LA didn’t look great. Only two scorers finished in double figures, led by Anthony Davis, who dropped 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. LeBron James meanwhile, went 0 for 7 from the field. As a team, LA shot an atrocious 31%. There was definitely some rust as expected and hopefully, they can turn it around against Phoenix.

The Suns are just a better team. We’re talking about the best squad in the league last season. They were also absolutely roasted for losing to Adelaide and surely felt some embarrassment. Phoenix will bounce back.

Pick: Suns -2.5 (-110)
