  • East-leading Brooklyn Nets visit the Los Angeles Clippers Monday night
  • Paul George (elbow) and Kevin Durant (COVID) will miss this matchup

The Brooklyn Nets may still be down the NBA’s leading scorer Monday night when they take on the Los Angeles Clippers, but somehow they’re in better shape than the home team.

While Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and LaMarcus Aldridge are among a handful of Nets down due to COVID protocols, the Clips will be without their two best offensive players in Paul George and Reggie Jackson, while Kawhi Leonard still recovers from knee surgery.

That’s why the visiting team is a 3.5-point favorite when things tip off at 10:30pm ET at crypto.com Arena.

Nets Outlook

Without Durant, who leads the NBA in scoring at 29.7 points per game, Brooklyn was happy to see James Harden go retro. The Beard poured in a team-high 36 points, adding 10 rebounds and 10 assists, as the Nets bounced the Lakers 121-115 on Christmas day.

It was just the fourth time this season Harden has scored more than 30+ in a game for Brooklyn.

He got some big help from Patty Mills, who finished with a season-high 34 points The Aussie guard set the Christmas day record for threes in a single game, drilling eight from downtown. He also added seven assists.

Bruce Brown had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, while DeAndre Bembry scored 15 points and five rebounds.

Big man Nic Claxton was a defensive menace, swatting a career-best five shots, but his biggest moment was a spectacular alley-oop conversion through LeBron James plus the foul, breaking a 115-tie for a lead Brooklyn wouldn’t relinquish.

At 22-9, Brooklyn continues to lead the Eastern Conference. They’re 12-3 on the road this year — the most road wins in the NBA this season.

Clippers Outlook

Already down Kawhi, the Clippers were dealt a big blow when it was announced that PG would be out with a torn ligament in his right elbow. He’s expected to be re-evaluated in 3-4 weeks, which puts him out until at least Jan 15.

George suffered the injury in a Dec 6 game against Portland, and returned after missing five games against the Spurs on Dec 20.

He was in the lineup for their Dec 23rd game against the Sacramento Kings, scoring 17 points, adding six rebounds and five steals, helping the Clippers win 105-89 and snap a three-game losing skid, but felt pain afterwards.

The Clippers are 17-16 and holding on to the fifth seed in the Western Conference, in large part due to PG-13’s standout year — his best showing since finishing top-3 in MVP voting in 2018-19, while still with the Thunder.

George is 10th in scoring at 24.7 pints per game, while adding 7.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists.

It’s not just George though: Jackson, having a breakout year as well averaging 17.2 points and 4.2 assists, is out due to health and safety protocols. Marcus Morris just came off the list, but he’s questionable because of conditioning. Backup big  Isaiah Hartenstein is also out with an ankle injury.

Nets vs Clippers Pick

Los Angeles will be playing the second half of a back-to-back, after losing 103-100 in Denver to the Nuggets Sunday night. Eric Bledsoe led the way with 18 points, 10 assists and five steals.

Both teams have been a bettors struggle on the year. Brooklyn is just 13-17-1 ATS, while the Clippers are 15-18 ATS, and are also 0-4 ATS when playing on zero days rest.

Brooklyn has proven they can compete at a high level without their full complement of stars, and Los Angeles doesn’t have the pieces to compete at the moment.

The Pick: Nets -3.5 (-110)
