Pick #1: Grizzlies vs Pistons

Memphis got off to a good start in the preseason with wins over the Bucks and Magic, but they’ve lost two in a row since. On Tuesday, the Grizzlies were beaten 109-105 by Orlando. Although Taylor Jenkins’ squad shot a putrid 25% from downtown, there were some bright spots. Desmond Bane went off for a team-high 33 points after his impressive campaign in 2021-22, while Ja Morant also dropped 23. However, the All-Star wasn’t efficient, going 8 for 24 from the field and 0 for 6 from deep.

Detroit is 0-3 and searching for their first victory. The Thunder took them down by 16 points on Tuesday, much in part to a huge night from long range for OKC. Killian Hayes had 20 points off the bench for the Pistons, while Saddiq Bey collected 19. Cade Cunningham also put up 10 points and eight rebounds. This is also their last preseason contest before the opener next Wednesday against Orlando.

Three of the Grizzlies’ four games so far were closer than the spread here but that was against three contenders. I like them to cover versus Detroit.

Pick: Grizzlies -6.5 (-110)

Pick #2: Thunder vs Spurs

Yes, it is the preseason, but you cannot ignore when a team goes 4-0. That’s where OKC stands right now and they’ve done it without rookie sensation Chet Holmgren, who will miss all of 2022-23 with a Lisfranc injury. The Thunder went to work on Detroit a couple of nights ago, lighting up the gym with a 41% clip from deep while outscoring their opponent 60-46 in the paint.

Josh Giddey, Jalen Williams, and Lu Dort all compiled 16 points apiece and Giddey dished out nine assists, showcasing his versatile skill set. In fact, six different scorers were in double digits. Contributions came from everywhere.

The Spurs meanwhile, just grabbed their very first victory, defeating the new-look Utah Jazz earlier in the week on the road. Two of the now veterans on this team, Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell, both dropped 20+ points, with Vassell’s 24 a game-high. San Antonio shot a stout 48% from the field, too. Gregg Popovich’s group came out of the gates firing, outscoring Utah 39-26 in the first quarter, and continued to pour it on. The Jazz made it close in the final period, but the Spurs held on.

Believe in the hot team, especially when they’re a slight underdog. OKC moneyline is a fantastic choice in the NBA preseason predictions.

Pick: Thunder moneyline (+108)
