  • Philadelphia will be without Joel Embiid (COVID) for a third straight game
  • The odds and matchups can be found below with a prediction

The Toronto Raptors wasted a golden chance to beat up on a division rival that was short-handed Wednesday night.

On the second night of a back-to-back, the same scenario presents itself when they visit the Philadelphia 76ers.

It’s a battle of two teams trying to find their way back into the win column. The Raptors have dropped three straight, while the Sixers have dropped two in a row, in this cold, Joel Embiid-less world.

Tip-off goes at 7pm ET from Wells Fargo Center, and has the depleted Sixers as a slight 2-point favorite.

Raptors Struggle vs Celtics

Toronto returned to the scene of their season’s finest triumph, a 115-83 blistering of the Celtics in Boston but the tides turned big time in the rematch.

Boston was the aggressor all night, building up an eight-point cushion after a quarter, a 16-point lead by half and were hardly threatened the rest of the way in a 104-88 win.

This without all-star Jaylen Brown, sitting with a hamstring injury, while Jayson Tatum was just 8-for-24 from the field for 22 points and 12 boards.

The Raptors didn’t do themselves any favors, turning the ball over 18 times that turned into 26 points. Each Toronto starter had at least two cough-ups, and 14 in total.

Their shooting wasn’t up to standard either, as the Raps shot a paltry 6-for-25 from beyond the arc (24%) — with only Fred VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr able to connect from deep. Toronto shot just 42.9% overall.

Rookie Scottie Barnes led the team in scoring with 21 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists. FVV had 16 points, six dimes and three steals.

It was a struggle for Raptors’ wing Pascal Siakam, playing just his second game of the season after offseason shoulder surgery. He was 3-for-7 from the field for eight points, with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Head coach Nick Nurse indicated Siakam may take a maintenance day Thursday against the 76ers. He would join reserves Khem Birch and Yuta Watanabe as players not available against Philly.

76ers Still Short-Handed

COVID health and safety protocols have ripped through the Sixers’ roster, and is putting a major dent in their hot start to the season.

The most notable absentee is big man Embiid, whose 2-game absence is the biggest reason for their current 2-game skid.

The good news is starting wing Tobias Harris’ 10-day quarantine ends Thursday, but it’s too soon to know if he’ll be able to suit up, and how much he would play. Matisse Thybulle and Isaiah Joe are still counting their days down, while Seth Curry missed Philly’s last loss against Milwaukee with a foot injury.

And yet, there’s still the ongoing Ben Simmons saga, with no timetable to when he’ll be moved or return to the lineup.

Still, Philadelphia gave the Milwaukee Bucks all they could handle last time out, but they faded down the stretch after taking a 102-101 lead with 5:43 left in the fourth quarter. They dropped a 118-019 decision.

Tyrese Maxey had 31 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Andre Drummond posted his second big board game, grabbing 20 rebounds to go along with 17 points. Shake Milton had 20 and Georges Niang had 21, as Philadelphia had just eight players available for the game.

Raptors vs 76ers Trends

This will be the first meeting between these two division rivals this year. Philadelphia took two out of three in the series last year, though with the current situation, there’s very little to glean from that.

Ranked 24th on the year in scoring, Toronto has dipped during their three-game slide, averaging just 97.3 points a game. Philadelphia is ninth in scoring defense, at 103.9 per contest, but that number is up to 110.5 in the smaller, recent two-game sample.

There is a chance Toronto can find their shooting stroke at Wells Fargo: Philadelphia is a middle-of-the-pack team in three-point shooting defense, allowing teams to hit at a 33.8% clip.

The Dinos were the last undefeated team against the spread on the road, falling to 4-1 on the year, but just 5-7 ATS overall. Philly is 3-4 ATS at home, and 4-3 straight up. They were the East’s best team at home a season ago, with a sparkling 29-7 mark.

What’s the Best Bet?

Philadelphia has been competitive in their games without Embiid, but they haven’t been able to convert those into wins.

Even with the Raptors playing consecutive nights, if they can clean up their game and match their opponents’ effort — something that was oddly not there to kick off a stretch of eight of their next nine on the road — they should be able to take this one.

The Pick: Raptors +2 (-110)
