  • Dallas is a 3.5 point favorite in the Suns vs Mavericks odds on Monday (Dec. 5)
  • Phoenix has won seven of their last eight contests coming in

Normally a trip to Dallas to face Luka Doncic on the second half of a back-to-back would be a daunting task. However, considering the Suns barely broke a sweat in their 38 point win in San Antonio on Sunday, they should be well rested.

In spite of Phoenix’s fresh legs, oddsmakers are still leaning towards the home team in the NBA odds, as they pegged Dallas as the chalk over the West’s top-team.

Suns vs Mavericks Betting Analysis

Phoenix (16-7, 4-5 away) built a 30 point second quarter lead and never looked back against the lowly Spurs. They handed San Antonio its 11th straight loss and set some season-best marks along the way.

The Suns recorded 38 assists, shot 52% from the field and buried 19 of their 28 triples. Deandre Ayton led the way with 25 points and 10 boards, while longshot NBA MVP odds candidate Devin Booker played just 28 minutes, chipping in 20 points and eight assists.

Booker came into the game averaging 45 points per game over his last three contests, and Phoenix was smart to preserve him for Monday’s showdown with Luka.

Defensively, Phoenix held San Antonio to a season-low 41 points in the opening half, while limiting them to 43.7% from the field and 19% from three for the game.

The Suns enter play as the most complete team in the West, ranking second in the NBA in offensive rating and sixth in defensive rating.

Dallas (11-11, 9-3 home) meanwhile, is fresh off just its second win in its last six outings. They took down the Knicks 121-100 on Saturday, with Doncic leading the way. Luka finished with 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while both he and Tim Hardaway each scored more points than the Knicks in the third quarter (19 and 17 vs 15).

The victory was just the Mavs second on the road this season, and it comes on the heels of a disappointing OT loss in Detroit. Dallas is 2-8 on the road this season, but they’ve been a far different team at home.

The Mavs don’t necessarily perform better offensively at home, but their defensive numbers are significantly stronger in their own building. They’re averaging just 103.8 points allowed at the American Airlines Center, as oppose to 113.7 points as visitors. Their opponent field goal percentage is 5% higher on the road, while they average 1.5 more takeaways at home.

Despite their 11-11 record, Dallas profiles as one of the better teams in the West. They rank inside the top-10 in both offensive and defensive rating, one of only three Western Conference teams that can say that.

Suns vs Mavericks Prediction

Phoenix has slightly worse road splits than home, but this team is dangerous no matter they play. They’ll likely be missing Chris Paul (heel) for the 14th straight game, but not even his absence has slowed them down. The Suns are 9-4 without the future Hall-of-Famer this season.

What does matter for this specific contest is the pace at which both teams operate at. Phoenix ranks bottom-11 in the league in that category, while the Mavericks are the second slowest squad behind only the Sixers.

NBA Team Possessions Per Game

Rank Team Possessions Per Game
30. Philadelphia 76ers 100.0
29. Dallas Mavericks 100.2
28. Portland Trail Blazers 100.8
27. Cleveland Cavaliers 100.9
26. LA Clippers 101.5

A slow style of play hasn’t led to an abundance of unders for Dallas, although the Mavs only meeting with the Suns this season did fall short of the total. Phoenix on the hand, has seen its games fall short of the total at the league’s eighth highest rate.

With both teams operating slowly and featuring top-10 defenses, look for this game to underwhelm offensively.

Pick: Under 221.5 (-110)
