It will be a master class of new-age point guard play Wednesday night, when Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors travel down the coast to battle Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers.

Dame is third in the league in scoring, just a tick above Curry – both just averaging under 30 a night. But it might be the supporting casts that could be the difference in this one. Currently, the Dubs are the road favorite.

This will be the third and final meeting of the season, with each team taking a victory.

Dame vs Steph

No matter your NBA top-5 guards, it’s not a legit list if Dame and Steph are not on it. The two have been dynamite in their own right this season.

For Curry, who played just five games last season after breaking his hand, has been the glue for a Golden State team that had the potential to be downright awful. Instead, Curry’s play has the Dubs at 19-16 and in the playoff mix in the ultra-tough West.

The two-time MVP is averaging 29.5 points, 6.4 assists and 5.4 rebounds, while stroking the 3-ball at a 41.3% clip. He’s coming off a 16-point performance in a loss to the Lakers last time out. It’s the first time in 16 games that he’s scored below 24 points in a game — a stretch that includes a 50-point game, a 40-point game, and five other games of 30+ points.

Lillard has had his own burden to carry: CJ McCollum, who was having an all-star caliber year, will miss his 20th game with a foot injury Wednesday. He’s joined on the sideline by starting center Jusuf Nurkic and power forward Zach Collins.

And yet, despite Portland 25th in the league in points allowed per game (115.1), while ranking a lowly 26th in field-goal and 23rd in three-point shooting defense, the Blazers are 19-14, in a three-way tie for fifth in the West.

Dame is the difference maker, averaging 29.6 points, 8.1 assists and 4.3 rebounds, while shooting 38% from deep. His 23-point effort in a win against the Hornets Monday was just the third time in 14 games he’s gone under 24 points, a stretch where he’s dropped 30+ eight times.

Who Can They Count On?

Draymond Green injured his ankle against the Lakers, and his status is up in the air. That could be a big loss, as the veteran big man was leading the team in assists at 8.5 dimes a game. His defensive presence was also a big factor in GState’s turnaround. The Warriors rank fifth in the NBA in defensive rating.

Curry is also flanked by wings Andrew Wiggins and Kelly Oubre Jr, who have upped their output as of late. Oubre Jr is averaging 21.5 points per game in his last seven. And Wiggins, despite coming off a season-low three points against LA, still averaged 16 points a game in February, while taking on the top defensive assignment on a nightly basis.

Portland has stayed afloat while McCollum has been out (10-9 in 19 games), due to the emergency of backup Gary Trent Jr. He’s averaged 18.5 points per game in the level-up role, while drilling 3.8 threes a night on 41.6% shooting. The Blazers enjoyed a Carmelo Anthony throwback last time out against Charlotte, as he put up 29, and Robert Covington chipped in 21. A big performance from any of the others could swing the result.

What’s the Best Bet?

Not surprisingly the winner of the Steph-Dame head-to-head has matched the end result in their previous meetings this year. In their first game, Lillard led all scorers with 34 (Curry had 26) in a 123-98 win. Last meeting, Curry went nuclear, dropping 62 (Lillard had 32) in a 137-122 romp.

Green’s uncertainty makes it tough to predict a game that’s basically a pick’em. So let’s dissect the total. Portland is ninth in scoring at 114.4, while Golden State is in 12th, putting up an even 114. While I think Portland will win, it should be in a good old-fashioned shootout.
