FSU’s Lucky Number is 3

Florida State posted perhaps its most impressive win of the season Monday when it handled #7 Virginia an 81-60 loss at home as a 2-point favorite.

Senior guard M.J. Walker led the way with 17 points. Junior forward RaiQuan Gray added 15 points on five 3-point field goals.

Eight different players connected for 3s as Florida State went 13 for 24 from beyond the arc for 54.2%. The Seminoles were 6 of 10 (60.0%) in the first half when they built a commanding 45-25 lead.

The only other team to have at least eight players make a 3-point field goal against a team in the Associated Press Top-10 in the last 25 years was Auburn in the 2019 NCAA regional semifinals against North Carolina.

Florida State shot 50.0% overall (29 of 58), committed just five turnovers and held a 37-20 advantage in bench scoring with four reserves finishing with at least 6 points. Sophomore center Balsa Koprivica scored 9 points after sitting out the previous game, a win over Wake Forest, with an ankle injury.

Walker has been a threat from deep all season, shooting 47.8% on 3-pointers while averaging a team-high 13.9 points a game. He is also an 85.7% foul shooter.

Gray has averages of 11.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals. He has reached double-figure scoring in seven straight games, averaging 16.4 points.

Freshman guard Scottie Barnes is averaging 10.2 points, 4.3 assists and 1.4 steals but has scored in single digits in four of his last five games.

Florida State is eighth nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency, scoring 118.0 points per 100 possessions according to KenPom.com

Losing Continues for Pitt

Pitt’s losing continued Wednesday as it lost 74-73 to North Carolina State at home as 4-point favorites. The Panthers had two field goal attempts in the final seconds that would have won the game but failed to convert.

Sophomore forward Justin Champagnie, who is one of the more underrated players in college basketball, had his 10th double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Champagnie is averaging 18.7 points and 11.5 rebounds and has had just 20 turnovers in 518 minutes.

He has also scored in double figures in every game.

Junior wing Au’Diese Toney added 17 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. He scored 14 points in the first half on 5-of-5 shooting.

Junior guard Xavier Johnson added 14 points for the Panthers, who shot 50.0% (28 of 56) but allowed North Carolina State to shoot 56.9% (29 of 51).

Toney is averaging 14.4 points and 5.9 rebounds.

Johnson has averages of 14.1 points and 5.9 assists while accounting for 29.1% of Pitt’s possessions when he is on the floor.

One-Time Only

This is the only scheduled meeting of the season between the teams after each won on its home floor last season – Pitt winning 63-61 as a 4-point underdog on opening night and Florida State notching an 82-67 victory as an 11-point favorite.

Florida State shot just 31.4% (16 of 51) in its loss but 50.0% (32 of 64) in the win. Toney had 15 points and 7 rebounds for Pitt in a losing effort.

Even though Florida State is just 1-2 on the road and has had to adjust on the fly this week, that should not stop the Seminoles from rolling against floundering Pitt.

Pick: Florida State -6.5 (-106)
