Two teams fighting for recognition in the loaded Big Ten square off Tuesday (Feb. 2nd, 6:30 pm EST) in College Park. The Purdue Boilermakers, fresh off an upset win over #21 Minnesota, eye a season sweep of the Maryland Terrapins, after previously defeating them at home on Christmas Day.
The Terps enter play following a 6-point loss to #14 Wisconsin, which snapped their three-game winning streak versus ranked opponents.

Purdue opened up as a 1-point road favorite, in a game that features a total of 134. The Boilermakers were missing the Big Ten’s leading 3-point shooter Sasha Stefanovic against the Golden Gophers due to COVID, and he’ll be forced to sit out this matchup as well.
Purdue Rallies Past Minnesota
Despite missing Stefanovic, Purdue still made it rain three’s against Minnesota. After a slow start from beyond the arc, the Boilermakers hit eight of their final 10 long distance shots, helping turn a 14-point deficit into a lopsided 19-point victory.

Redshirt Freshman Brandon Newman led the way with a career-high 29, 21 of which came in the second half. Trevion Williams chipped in 17 ponts and a game-high 14 boards, helping Purdue dominate on the glass. They out rebounded the Golden Gophers 44-27, grabbing 17 boards at the offensive end. The Boilermakers had a massive rebounding advantage in their first meeting with the Terps, which was one of the biggest keys to victory.

They rank third in the conference in total rebounding, and have a major size advantage over Maryland thanks to their twin towers Williams and Zach Edey.
Defensively, Purdue is yielding the third fewest points per game, the fewest amount of 2-point buckets, and only two programs allow a lower enemy shooting percentage.
Terps Fall to Badgers
Maryland meanwhile, turned in one of its worst shooting performances of the season last time out, knocking down just 36% of its looks against Wisconsin. They started the game 7-for-28 from the field, including 2-for-14 from beyond the arc, and dug themselves into a hole they couldn’t overcome. Aaron Wiggins led the way offensively with 19 points, while Donta Scott chipped in 13.

The Terps were once again dominated on the glass, and rank 12th in the Big Ten in total rebounding, not surprising given they don’t feature a starter above 6-foot-7. Only one player on the roster who logs serious minutes stands 6-foot-9, which spells big problems against the 6-foot-10 Williams, and 7-foot-4 Edey.
Maryland is the worst team in the conference at defending the 3-ball, and only four programs yield a higher shooting percentage.
Offensively, they rank 13th in points for, 11th in field goal percentage and last in made field goals per game.

Given their size advantage and how well they’ve been playing recently, Purdue feels like the right side in this matchup. The betting trends tend to agree, as the Boilermakers are 5-1 ATS in their last six outings, while it’s been very profitable to pick on the Terps against the spread in conference play.

Maryland is just 2-6 ATS in their last 8 overall, and 3-6 this season at home. They’ve been even worse as a home dog, failing to beat the number all three times they’ve been in that situation in 2020-21.
