Virginia Cavaliers Betting Analysis

The Cavaliers (12-9, 6-5 ACC) last outing was a 69-65 defeat to Notre Dame. It was Virginia’s first loss in its last seven meetings with the Irish, and some poor shooting was to blame.

The Cavaliers shot 46.8% from the field, but made only three of 14 three-point attempts. Senior Jayden Gardner led Virginia with 22 points and 10 rebounds, racking up his fifth double-double of the campaign. Reece Beekman added 13 points, while Francisco Caffaro chipped in 11 points, and 12 boards, but the Cavaliers lost for the fourth straight time when surrendering more than 62 points.

Bottom line, this Virginia offense simply isn’t good enough. They rank second last in the conference in points per game (62.7), and bottom-five in three-point efficiency, and effective field goal percentage.

Normally, defense is where they shine, but that wasn’t the case against Notre Dame. They allowed the Irish to knock down 46.8% of their looks, including 43.5% of their triples.

It was rare during their out of conference schedule to yield more than 60 points, but that hasn’t been the case during ACC play. They’ve surrendered at least 61 points in eight of their past 10 conference games, and not surprisingly they’ve lost five of those contests.

For the season, the Cavaliers are 10th nationally in opponent points per game (59.8), but rank just ninth out of 15 ACC schools in defensive rating during conference action.

Boston College Eagles Betting Analysis

The Eagles (9-11, 4-6 ACC) meanwhile, snapped a two-game losing streak last time out, taking down Pittsburgh 69-56. Makai Ashton-Langford led the way with 21 points, while DeMarr Langford splashed 15 points, and Quinten Post picked up his first career double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds).

BC was ultra efficient shooting the ball, by its standards anyway, making 45% of its attempts, including 33.3% of its threes. The Eagles are one of the lowest scoring teams in the ACC, ranking just ahead of Virginia in points per game (65.7). They rank 286th nationally in field goal percentage, and 248th in assist-to-field goal ratio.

The reason they’re able to stay competitive is thanks to their defense. BC ranks fifth in the ACC in scoring defense, yielding just 65.8 points per game. Their strong defense was on full display against the Panthers, as they held Pitt to 35.1% from the field, while forcing 13 turnovers en route to victory.

Boston College vs Virginia Pick

Expecting the Cavaliers to cover 8.5 points is a tough ask. Not only is this team one of the lowest-scoring programs in the nation (326th out of 358), but they also rank dead -ast in tempo. Virginia averages just 61.3 possessions per contest, and over its last three games that number is actually down to 59.4.

It’s harder to post convincing wins averaging so few possessions unless your defense is playing out of its mind, and that just hasn’t been the case for the Cavaliers lately, as noted. That explains why Virginia has struggled to cover spreads. They’re 4-7 ATS as a home favorite, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five outings as a favorite of 4 or more points.

The Eagles on the other hand, have covered in four of six overall, and are 6-4 ATS so far in conference play. They might not win on Tuesday, but they can certainly cash a +8.5 ticket.

Pick: Boston College Eagles +8.5 (-110)
