After COVID issues forced them to pull out of last year’s ACC Tournament — and cost them a berth in the 2021 NCAA Tournament — the Duke Blue Devils (2-0) appear to have come back with a vengeance for the 2021-22 campaign.
One of college basketball’s true blue bloods handled fellow heavyweight Kentucky 79-71 Tuesday in Madison Square Garden and took care of business in its first home game of the season against Army 82-56 Friday. Now, Duke hosts the in-state program Campbell Fighting Camels (2-0) Saturday as heavy favorites.
Tip time is at 8:00 pm ET at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Coach K’s farewell tour got off to a rousing start in the Big Apple thanks to his latest group of stellar freshmen.
Trevor Keels scored 25 points while possible No. 1 pick and classmate Paolo Banchero had 22 (while battling cramps) to help the No. 9 Blue Devils open their coach’s final season by beating 10th-ranked Kentucky 79-71 on Tuesday night in the nightcap of the Champions Classic. Despite missing some key minutes against UK, look for Banchero to impress Saturday.
Paolo Banchero is basically an NBA player playing college right now. Just the pure polish. Already has a nasty step-back from 17, a one-dribble pull-up off of a closeout, a grab and go into a drive with tremendous footwork to draw a foul, then a rip through to draw a foul.

At 6-foot-11 and weighing 250 pounds, the Seattle-area native can jump out of the gym with a 40-plus inch vertical and is the closest thing to an extra-terrestrial creature the college game has seen in years. It’s highly unlikely Campbell will be overmatched by the diaper dandy.

While Banchero may be the better NBA prospect, Keels stole the show against the Wildcats. There was a sentiment coming out of high school that his offensive potential is outstanding. That was certainly on display at MSG. Seeing just how heavily Coach K leaned on that ability in Keels’ collegiate debut gives a glimpse into what kind of season it’s going to be for the freshman. He will be the go-to guard offensively for Duke all season, and possibly Saturday.
Mr. Wendell and His Friends
Coming into this season, the rumors out of Durham were that Wendell Moore Jr. had transformed his body, developed his jump-shot, and bolstered his confidence—ready to be the veteran leader for another young Duke team. Although the stats (12 pts, 4 rebs, 3 ast) don’t jump off of the page, his development was evident against Kentucky. Moore will be a significantly more impactful and consistent offensive player for Duke this season.

After Moore, there’s a trio of shooters to contend with in Jeremy Roach, Joey Baker and Jaylen Blakes.
Roach experienced some accuracy woes last season, dipping below the 30% clip from long distance in conference play. The good news? He converted 12-of-25 trifecta attempts over Duke’s final seven games. Meantime, Baker’s sniper reputation infuses confidence he can trend closer toward the 40% mark in his fourth full season. And Blakes, a fringe top-100 recruit, is more of a scorer than a pure shooter but he did connect on 37% of his 3-point attempts as a junior in high school.
Look for this group to help make it a long night for the Camels amid the Cameron Crazies.
Fight Away
Head coach Kevin McGeehan’s program has contended in the Big South in recent seasons, but has faltered in the conference tourney and failed to earn an automatic bid to the Big Dance.
The Camels opened with an 85-50 win over Division III William Peace Tuesday night and beat reigning America East champ Hartford 68-67 Friday. Junior forward Jesus Carralero came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points Tuesday, while senior guard Jordan Whitfield added 14 for the Camels, who shot 59.6% from the floor.
The program returns 99% of its points and minutes played from last season and was picked in to win the Big South Conference North Division in the annual preseason poll of league coaches and media. Defending champion Winthrop was picked to win the South Division.
This team will show fight against Coach K’s charges Saturday. But I don’t expect them to hang with the ultra-talented — and highly motivated — Blue Devils.
