Is St. John’s 8-1 record for real? Or have the Red Storm simply been a product of an easy schedule? The analytics community believes the answer lies somewhere in the middle, as St. John’s currently ranks 46th in both KenPom’s metrics and ESPN’s BPI.

The Red Storm have faced just one top-30 team so far this season, and their soft schedule continues on Wednesday in their first Big East action versus 99th-ranked DePaul (5-3). Online sportsbooks don’t expect too much fight from the Blue Demons, listing St. John’s as the 9.5-point chalk in the college basketball odds.

St. John’s Betting Analysis

St. John’s ran into its first real test of the season over the weekend, and left Iowa State with a 71-60 loss. The #23 ranked Cyclones flipped the script on the full-court pressing Red Storm, forcing 20 turnovers and limiting them to a 36% field goal percentage.

The 60 points were a season-low for St. John’s, as it took them over 9 minutes to register their first made field goal. They enter play averaging 80.9 points per game, which ranks 23rd in the nation, while also ranking 23rd in assists. The Red Storm are not a strong shooting team, however they make up for it by dominating on the glass.

St. John’s ranks ninth in total rebounding, and 11th on the offensive glass. Their dominance on the boards has led to an abundance of second chance opportunities, which has helped them to the seventh most made field goals in the country.

Defensively, they are by no means a lock down unit if their opponent can navigate the press. They rank 90th in opponent shooting percentage and 126th in scoring defense. What saves them is takeaways, which they rack up consistently. The Red Storm average the 24th most steals in college hoops, while forcing 16 turnovers per contest.

DePaul Betting Analysis

DePaul meanwhile, enters play fresh off back-to-back wins after a three-game slide. They knocked off Loyola Chicago in overtime last time out, but are still looking for their first win over a top-135 opponent. They’ve played three teams listed in the National Championship odds far this season, losing by a combined 28 points.

The Blue Demons are an above average team offensively, averaging 76.6 points per game. Like their opponent on Wednesday they don’t shoot it very well, but they make up for it with heavy three-point volume. DePaul ranks top-60 in three-point attempts, and 42nd in made three’s.

Defensively, it’s been a big of a struggle especially against quality opposition. They rank 264th in opponent points per game, and have surrendered an average of 78 points per contest in their three toughest outings.

They’re especially vulnerable on the glass, which should be music to the Red Storm’s ears. The Blue Demons are 202nd in total rebounding, and 311th in defensive rebounding percentage.

DePaul vs St. John’s Prediction

DePaul’s lack of prowess on the glass is going to make for a field day for St. John’s. The Red Storm should dominate the battle of the boards, racking up loads of second chance opportunities and easy put backs along the way. St. John’s is also set up for success along the perimeter as the Blue Demons defense is incredibly underwhelming.

DePaul’s poor defensive numbers have led to a good chunk of their early games going over the total, especially recently. The over has hit in each of their past four games, clearing the total by an average of 22 points.

DePaul vs St. John’s 2021-22 Results

Date Away Team Home Team Result
03/09/22 DePaul St. John’s SJU, 93-72
02/27/22 St. John’s DePaul DEP, 99-94
01/05/22 DePaul St. John’s SJU, 89-84

These two played three high-scoring games last season against one another, and with plenty of returning players on both sides we should see a similar game script unfold. Those three matches averaged 177 points, and this one should be full of offense as well.

Pick: Over 152.5 (-110)
