Howard Outlook

Freshman guard Elijah Hawkins has made an immediate impact in his first season after being recruited from nearby DeMatha Catholic.

Hawkins is filling the stat sheet with averages of 14.3 points, 6.9 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 steals. He has scored in double figures in seven of eight games and had 11 points and three steals against American.

In that Dec. 4 game, sophomore forward Steve Settle III led the rout with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. He was 8 of 11 from the floor and finished two points short of his season scoring high.

Settle is second on the team in scoring with a 13.4 average. Right behind is senior guard Kyle Foster at 13.0.

Senior forward Randall Brumant made all seven shots from the floor against American as he finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. The transfer from Columbia is averaging 10.4 and 5.6 rebounds.

Another Columbia transfer, senior guard Tai Bibbs, added 14 points. Howard coach Kenny Blakeney was an assistant at Columbia when Brumant and Bibbs began their collegiate careers.

Howard overwhelmed American as it shot 55.1% (38 of 69) and held a 38-26 rebounding edge. The Bison scored the game’s first nine points, extended the lead to 27-13 and eventually stretched the advantage to 43-22 by halftime.

Howard is 5-0 when it holds opponents to 44.3% or less from the field but 0-4 when it doesn’t. The Bison are forcing turnovers on 26% of opposing possessions, the 16th-best mark in the country.

Georgetown Outlook

Georgetown also has an outstanding freshman guard in Aminu Mohammed. He has been one of the most productive first-year players in the country.

Mohammed showcased his all-round game against Syracuse when he had 23 points, 13 rebounds and five assists – all season highs. He also recorded his second straight double-double and fourth of the season.

Mohammed is averaging 15.1 points and 8.7 rebounds.

Senior wing Kaiden Rice is scoring 14.6 points a game after transferring from The Citadel. Rice scored 15 points on five three-pointers against Syracuse.

Sophomore guard Dante Harris is having a fine season on the heels of winning the Dave Gavitt Outstanding Player Award in the Big East Tournament last season in leading eighth-seeded Georgetown to an improbable title. Harris has averages of 13.1 points, 4.5 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 steals.

Donald Carey contributed 18 points Saturday and the senior guard is averaging 12.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists. Sophomore forward Collin Holloway scored 10 points off the bench on 5-for-7 shooting.

Georgetown trailed Syracuse 44-34 at halftime but rallied behind 56% shooting in the second half. The Hoyas shot 37% in the first half.

Since getting upset by Dartmouth in its opener, Georgetown has won five straight home games by an average margin of 16.2 points.

Howard vs Georgetown Prediction

Georgetown is 10-0 all-time against Howard, winning each game by at least 13 points. The Hoyas prevailed 102-67 during the 2018-19 season in the last meeting.

Howard plays strong defense but the Bison are stepping up in class in this one. Look for Mohammed and the rest of the Hoyas to cover the double-digit spread.

The Pick: Georgetown -10.5 (-105)
