Iowa State Betting Analysis

Well rested and coming off an impressive 71-60 victory over St. John’s, the Cyclones will be riding high heading into this rivalry matchup. Against the Red Storm, the Cyclones aggressive defense led the way, forcing 20 turnovers and limiting St. John’s to 36% shooting from the field.

Those numbers are even more impressive when you take into consideration that St, John’s was averaging 80.9 points per game on offense coming into that matchup. While the Cyclones rank 41st overall in the KenPom ratings, they’re 13th in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency.

That terrific defense is the main reason they’ve gone under the betting total in seven of eight games so far this year. They have suffered one loss this year, a 71-53 beatdown to UConn where they sent the Huskies to the charity stripe 25 times.

Staying out of foul trouble and preventing easy points in the process will be key to Iowa State having any success against the Hawkeyes.

Iowa Hawkeyes Betting Analysis

After starting the season 5-0, Iowa has slipped somewhat, losing two of their last three to stiffer competition. In addition, while they’re still 5-3 against the spread so far this year, they are just 1-3 ATS in their last four.

More is expected from Iowa than their intrastate opponents this year and perhaps those expectation along with the fact this is a home game is why they are the chalk in the college basketball odds.

They thrive on offense where their 116.1 adjusted offensive efficiency rating ranks 6th overall in Division I according to KenPom.

Leading scorer Kris Murray will look to put his poor performance against Duke in their most recent game behind him. The junior forward, who is averaging 19.4 points per game, had a season low eight points in Iowa’s last outing at the Jimmy V Classic. Murray also lead the Hawkeye’s in rebounds, averaging 10.1 boards per game.

Iowa State vs Iowa Prediction

It’s got to be unsettling for Iowa to look at the AP rankings and see the Cyclones sitting at number 20 in the nation, while the Hawkeyes look in from the outside. A win against Iowa State in this matchup could flip that script around rather quickly.

The home team has won six of the last seven games outright between these teams, so the advantage lies with Iowa there. Iowa State has already proven to be more than competent defensively against top level competition. It’s a reason to consider them a longshot in the odds to win March Madness.

The Cyclones are only giving up 56.8 points per game this year, so even if they lose, this will likely be a tight game. Another trend to note, the underdog is 7-1-1 ATS in the last nine meetings between these two squads. Our best bet in the college basketball odds is to pick Iowa State to keep this one close.

Pick: Iowa State +6.5 (-115)
