  • The UConn Huskies are 24.5-point home favorites over the LIU Sharks in an NCAA men’s basketball game slated for Wednesday, November 17
  • At 2-0 on the season, the Huskies have jumped from #24 to #23 in the AP top-25 NCAA rankings
  • KenPom rates UConn at #21 and LIU at #274

Sharks aren’t used to being the prey, but the LIU Sharks figure to be hunted all night long by the UConn Huskies. Off to a 2-0 start on the season, UConn is climbing the AP top-25 rankings.

Their first-week performance saw the Huskies moving up one notch among the top 25, shifting into 23rd spot after opening the season as the #24-ranked school.

KemPom is showing UConn in as the #21 ranked team in the nation. LIU are a distant #274.

That discrepancy is also evident in the odds as these two schools clash on the court on Wednesday. Oddsmakers are setting the Huskies as 24.5-point home favorites. UConn is 7-3 against the spread as the home chalk since the beginning of last season.

UConn Huskies Betting Trends

Two games into the season, UConn is crushing it. The unbeaten Huskies won their first two games of the season over Central Connecticut and Coppin State by an average margin of 43.0 points.

UConn is shooting .529 overall and .419 from 3-point range, while outrebounding opponents by 11.5 boards per game. The Huskies are also forcing opponents into 26.0 turnovers per game, while only committing 12.5 of their own turnovers.

Individually, leading the way for UConn is Adama Sanogo, a sophomore forward from Mali. He’s scored 20 points in both victories. Sanogo is hitting at an astonishing .792 rate (19-of-24) from the field.

It’s truly been a balanced attack for the Huskies so far this season, though. Guards RJ Cole (15.5), Tyrese Martin (14.5) and Jalen Gaffney (10.5) and forward Akok Akok (10.0) are all averaging double digits in points per game. Gaffney is dishing out a team-best 5.5 assists per game. Guard Andre Jackson is setting the pace in rebounding with 7.5 boards per game.

LIU Sharks Betting Trends

Sharks need to keep in motion to stay alive but the downward motion exhibited early in the season by the LIU Sharks isn’t a productive direction.

Long Island plays out of the Northeast Conference, but opted to trek to the West Coast to open its season. In California, the Sharks lost to 94-68 to San Francisco and 84-60 at Fresno State.

In the loss at San Francisco, LIU never led. The Sharks committed 18 turnover that led to 25 points for the Dons. Against Fresno State, an early 23-3 run by the Bulldogs quickly put the game out of reach. LIU shot just 35.4% from the field in the setback.

Ty Flowers, a 6-foot-9 grad student from Waterbury, Connecticut leads LIU  in scoring (17.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.5 rpg). Forward Eral Penn (16.5) and guard Kyndall Davis (10.5) are also averaging in double figures in scoring.

UConn vs LIU Prediction

UConn covered as 32-point favorites against CCSU in the season opener. However, the Huskies failed to cover as a 42-point pick over Coppin State. LIU is 0-2 ATS as a road underdog this season and 2-5 ATS in that scenario since the beginning of last season.

There’s a history between UConn-LIU that dates back to 1967-68, but it’s a limited one. And much time has passed since their previous meeting.  The last game between the two schools was an 84-69 UConn victory on November 24, 1978. That was in the first round of the Charlotte Invitational Tournament.

These two teams have only met four times in 54 years, each winning twice. But don’t read a whole lot into that history. In the present time, UConn will dominate LIU.

Pick: UConn -24.5 (-110)
