Another loaded Tuesday college hoops slate is on deck, with perhaps no matchup bigger than the #10 Marquette vs #19 Creighton contest. The Golden Eagles (21-6, 13-3 Big East) enter play alone in first in the Big East, although online sportsbooks don’t expect them to be on top by themselves for long.

That’s because the Blue Jays (20-7, 12-4 Big East), who are currently tied for second in the conference, have been pegged as the chalk for this pivotal matchup in the college basketball odds.

Marquette vs Creighton Betting Analysis

These are two of the top-12 teams in overall efficiency per KenPom’s metrics. Creighton has the slight advantage overall (10 vs 12), despite a lower ranking. The Blue Jays are the more balanced of the two programs, ranking 27th in adjusted offensive efficiency, and 11th on defense. They also have the shorter price tag in the National Championship odds.

The Golden Eagles meanwhile, are exceptional on offense, but are vulnerable in their own end. Marquette ranks third in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency, and 13th in points per game. Defensively however, it’s a different story. The Golden Eagles are 67th in adjusted defensive efficiency, and 181st in scoring defense.

That’s the seventh worst mark in the Big East (out of 11 teams), but the offense has been more than good enough to overcome inconsistent defensive play. Marquette has ripped off 14 wins in its last 17 games. All three of those losses have come on the road, and they haven’t exactly excelled as visitors versus quality programs – more on that later.

Creighton is a perfect 8-0 at home in Big East play, most recently squeaking past UConn, who were ranked 21st at the time. The Blue Jays have won nine of 10 overall, holding eight of those opponents to 67 points or less.

The Bluejays have beaten each of the past three ranked opponents they’ve faced at home, including both Xavier and Providence who they’re tied with for second in the conference.

Marquette vs Creighton Predictions

The Golden Eagles took the first meeting between these two rivals in December 69-58. That was their first win in five meetings against Creighton, and just their second in the last nine head-to-head battles. Marquette has a fantastic 14-1 home record, but are only 6-4 on the road.

They’ve lost all four road battles versus teams that were ranked at the time they faced them, and have covered only once in their past four outings overall.

The Bluejays have struggled against the spread as well recently, but this is a spot to buy them. Their offense is more than capable of sticking with the Golden Eagles, and their defense is significantly stronger. Creighton is 18-4 straight up as favorites this season, and have an average margin of victory of 8.8 points.

When they first met earlier this season, the Blue Jays were without leading scorer Ryan Kalkbrenner. The 7-1 center is a nightmare matchup for any opposing team, especially Marquette. The Golden Eagles don’t have a single primary rotation player who stands above 6-9.

Look for Kalkbrenner’s rebounding prowess and post presence to help carry Creighton to a victory, and a share of the Big East lead.

Pick: Creighton Bluejays -5.5 (-110)
