Washington State Cougars Betting Analysis

The Cougars will be looking to avoid another upset, after falling to South Dakota State 77-74 at the buzzer last time out, as a 6-point favorite. Leading scorer Michael Flowers led the way with 24, while T.J. Bamba added 19.

Washington State was uncharacteristically poor from the field, shooting just 37.3%. They knocked down only 25.7% of their threes, while losing the rebounding and assist battle. For the season, the Cougars boast a very strong offense which makes this result surprising. They average 78.9 points per game, and 8.7 threes, which is the most in the Pac-12.

Defensively, the effort versus the Jackrabbits was an even bigger outlier. They yielded a 53.8% shooting percentage, and allowed South Dakota State to make 10 of its 16 three-point attempts. On the plus side they did force 18 turnovers, but they couldn’t generate enough offense off those giveaways to prevail.

Washington State ranks 65th in the nation in scoring defense this season, 46th in opponent effective field goal percentage, and 26th in blocks.

New Mexico State Aggies Betting Analysis

New Mexico State meanwhile, is fresh off a 63-58 victory over Loyola Marymount, which on paper, was their most difficult test in nearly a month.

Teddy Allen led the way with 12 points, and 8 rebounds, while Sir’Jabari Rice finished with 11 points, and 6 boards. The Aggies shot 46.5% from the field, despite being held without a field goal over the final 7 minutes. They were able to preserve the victory thanks to some clutch free throw shooting, and in spite of some sloppy play.

New Mexico State committed a season-high 26 turnovers, which led to 32 points for the Lions. The Aggies were also atrocious from three, making just 2 of 16 attempts, but dominated on the glass, and on defense.

The Aggies held Loyola Marymount to 33.9% from the field, and 23.1% from three. New Mexico State is far from an elite defense however, ranking 208th in opponent points per game, and 90th in opponent effective field goal percentage.

They’re much stronger offensively, averaging over 73 points per game, which has led to plenty of high scoring affairs.

New Mexico State vs Washington State Pick

The Aggies have scored at least 75 points in six of their past eight games. Their last outing notwithstanding, they’ve also been incredibly kind to opposing offenses surrendering at least 75 points in four of their past seven.

Not surprisingly, the over has hit in seven of New Mexico State’s past eight contests. The Cougars on the other hand, haven’t been an over machine, but have cleared the total in five of their 10 outings this season.

These two programs rank 61st and 89th in adjusted offensive efficiency per KenPom, and should be able to push each other enough to generate plenty of points. Play the over.

Pick: Over 137.5 (-110)
