San Diego State Betting Analysis

San Diego State enters play fresh off a 74-62 statement win at Stanford. The Aztecs knocked off the Cardinal for the first time in five career meetings, showcasing the depth and tenacious defense that earned them Mountain West preseason favorite status in the college basketball conference championship odds.

Leading scorer Jaedon Lee led the offense with 14 points, while Lamont Butler and Keshad Johnson each added 11 points. Six San Diego State players currently average at least 7 points per outing, while five rotational players shoot at least 54.5% from the field.

Defensively, this program profiles as one of the best in the country in their own end. The Aztecs rank eighth in adjusted defensive efficiency, and sixth in steal percentage. They’ve held their opponents to 64 points per game and under 9 assists.

They turned 17 Stanford turnovers into 21 points, and shot 51% from the field overall. After a gimme victory in their season opener against Cal-State Fullerton, they’ve now beaten BYU and the Cardinal, two top-63 teams in the nation.

Ohio State Betting Analysis

The Buckeyes road to 3-0 has been a lot softer. They’ve yet to be pushed, as none of the opening three opponents rank inside the top-275 in the nation.

Last time out, they pounded Eastern Illinois 65-43, a program that ranks 354th in the country. Freshman Brice Sensabaugh led the offense with a career-high 20 points, marking his third straight 14+ point performance.

Senior guard Tanner Holden chipped in 8 points, while junior forward Zed Key added his third straight double-double with 10 points and 14 boards.

If there’s an area Ohio State can dominate San Diego State in on Monday it’s on the glass. The Buckeyes held a 52-37 advantage on the glass in their previous outing and rank fourth in the nation in total rebounding.

Ohio State ranks eighth in average score margin (+28.7), but that can largely be attributed to their soft schedule. The same could be said of their defense, except the Buckeyes were strong at that end of the floor last season as well.

They’re allowing just 50.7 points per game so far, the fourth lowest mark in the country. Opponents are averaging just 6 assists, while no team in college hoops has yielded a lower opponent shooting efficiency mark.

Ohio State vs San Diego State Prediction

In a matchup of two sound defenses, we should look to target the under here. The Aztecs relentless defense is going to give the Buckeyes fits, while San Diego State is likely to suffer some serious regression from the field against the toughest set of defenders they’ve faced to date.

Ohio State’s 2022-23 Results

Date Away Home Result
11/07/2022 Robert Morris Ohio State OSU, 91-53
11/10/2022 Charleston Southern Ohio State OSU, 82-56
11/16/2022 Eastern Illinois Ohio State OSU, 65-43

Pace is also working in favor of the under, as these two defenses make their opponents work harder than nearly anyone else. San Diego State’s defense forces an average possession length of 18.6 seconds, which is a full second and a half longer than the national average.

Ohio State doesn’t make enemy shooters work for quite so long, but it’s close. They force an average opponent possession length of 18.1 seconds, which is still a top-65 mark in all of college hoops.

Pick: Under 143 (-110)
