Forget their ranking and their record. When it comes to the analytics, the numbers say no. 18 UConn is a top-six program in the country. The Huskies (20-7, 9-7 Big East) have the highest overall efficiency grade per KenPom in the Big East, which helps explain why they’re such a big favorite on Wednesday in the college basketball odds.

UConn will host no. 20 Providence in one of the marquee matchups of the evening, and they’ll be looking for revenge after the Friars (20-7, 12-4 Big East) took them down in their first meeting.

Providence vs UConn Betting Trends

Providence earned a 73-61 home victory the last time these two teams met, as a 5.5 point underdog. The Friars held the Huskies to 36.5% from the field, and 22.7% from three. Offensively, their overall shooting numbers weren’t great (36.7%), although they did make the most of their three-point attempts.

Providence knocked down 8-of-18 threes, which was ultimately the difference in this game. The Friars enter play averaging 78.9 points per game, the 23rd highest mark in the country. Defensively, they’re not as strong but as UConn found out, they do defend the three-point line very well.

The Friars are allowing opponents to knock down only 31% of their three-point attempts, compared to 49% of their two-point looks. They’re one of the best rebounding teams in the country at both ends, and rank top-27 in blocks per game.

Providence has won 13 of 17 coming in, however they haven’t fared very well on the road. They’ve dropped each of their past four road games, losing to Marquette, Creighton and Xavier, three teams the Friars are battling with for the Big East’s top seed.

The Huskies meanwhile, are one of only three teams in the country to rank top-17 in both adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency. UConn, a top-15 contender in the National Championship odds, is averaging 78 points per game, and has the fifth best average score margin in the nation (+13.7).

Defensively, they lead the conference in points allowed, and have been incredibly stingy on their home court. The Huskies have held 11 of 16 opponents to 66 points or less in Connecticut. Not surprisingly, that’s led to a fantastic home record. UConn is 13-2 inside their own building, with an average margin of victory of 18.8 points.

Providence vs UConn Predictions

Much like their opponent on Wednesday, the Huskies are also elite on the glass at both ends. UConn ranks third in offensive rebounding percentage in the country and 22nd on defense. They’re also excellent defending the rim, ranking 10th in block percentage.

Two strong defenses, that rebound the ball well and protect the rim is a good recipe for a low scoring game. Their first meeting produced only 134 points, and Providence has been a cash cow for under bettors lately.

Providence vs UConn Head-to-Head

Providence Friars
VS
UConn Huskies
20 Rank 18
20-7 Record 20-7
78.9 Points per Game 78.0
69.6 Points Against per Game 64.3
51.8% Effective FG% 52.6%
48.0% Opponent Effective FG% 45.1%
Nine of the Friars past 14 games have gone under the total, including four of six on the road. The Huskies haven’t been as under heavy as their conference rival, although three of their past four games have gone under by an average of 22 points.

Another reason to be bullish on a low scoring affair is the pace at which both these teams play at. Both rank outside the top-175 in adjusted tempo, while Providence is 198th in average possession length and UConn is 206th.

Pick: Under 144.5 (-110)
