Odds from FanDuel on Nov. 20

SMU has jumped on its last two opponents early. The Ponies scored the first 13 points in a 78-61 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in their last time out Thursday after scoring the first 16 points in a 95-48 victory over Northwestern (La.) State on Monday.

SMU’s Davis on Point

The Mustangs’ season took an immediate turn for the better when junior point guard Kendric Davis pulled his name from consideration for the NBA draft last summer, and early returns bear that out.

Davis, 5’11, had a season-high 25 points with a season-high three 3-pointers in the Mustangs’ 78-61 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in their last time out Thursday and is averaging 17.8 points and six assists through four games. He has made 28 of 31 free throw attempts.

Davis finished one rebound short of his first career triple-double in the Ponies’ 95-48 victory over Northeastern (La.) State on Monday, when he had 19 points, 10 assists and two steals. His nine rebounds tied a career high.

A preseason all-ACC pick, Davis led the American Athletic Conference in scoring (18.4 points) and assists (7.4) a year ago, and he also  finished third with 1.6 steals per game. He had a career-high 35 points in a first-round loss to Cincinnati in the AAC tournament a year ago and had 23 points and 12 assists in a first-round loss to Boise State in the NIT.

Missouri a Work in Progress

Missouri is off to an off-and-on start after losing its top four scorers and returning only one starter from an NCAA tournament team a year ago.

Kobe Brown, a 6’7 senior and the only returning starter, is taking charge. He leads the Tigers with 14.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game and had his third career double-double — 13 points,13 rebounds — in the victory over Northern Illinois, also adding six assists.

Newcomer Ronnie DeGray III, a 6’7 transfer from UMass, is adding 12.3 points and 7.7 rebounds off the bench and has scored in double figures in all three games.

Sophomore center Jordan Wilmore, 7’3, is working his way into the rotation after playing only 26 minutes in 2020-21. He had career highs with 11 points, six rebounds, three blocks and 16 minutes against Northern Illinois. Senior 6’5 guard Javon Pickett, who played off the bench last season after starting his first two years, is back in the lineup and averaging 11.7 points.

SMU Reloads

Davis is leading a re-formed SMU team that lost six of its eight leading scorers and eight of its 10 rotation members a year ago. The Weathers twins have helped.

Duquesne graduate transfer Marcus Weathers, a 6’5 forward, has transitioned well, averaging 13.5 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds in four starts with double-doubles in the last two. He averaged 12.8 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 51.4 percent from the field in three seasons with the Dukes.

Michael Weathers, a 6’3 senior, is averaging 7.5 points in his two starts. Michael, on his fourth college stop, led Texas Southern in scoring (16.5), assists (5.2) and steals a year ago and had 24 points in an NCAA tournament second-round loss to Michigan last year. Sam Houston State transfer Zach Nuttal, a 6’3 guard, has started the last two games.

By the Numbers

SMU is No. 60 in the KenPom rankings. Missouri is 113, ahead of only Georgia in the 14-team SEC. Missouri was 12-14 ATS last season, 6-4 ATS as an underdog. SMU was a 7-10 ATS a year ago, 6-7 ATS as a favorite.

Missouri’s lone loss was 80-66 at home to Kansas City, formerly UMKC. The Tigers were 4 of 14 from distance in that game and  are shooting 27.3 from three-point range, 301st among the 350 NCAA Division I schools. Missouri limited Northern Illinois to 24.1 percent shooting Thursday, but matching up with Davis will be another thing entirely.

The pick: SMU -5.5 (-120)
