Playing to the Buzzer

UConn has been on both ends of the exhilaration scale in the Battle 4 Atlantis, hitting a season-high in points in the 115-109 double-overtime victory over No. 19 Auburn on Wednesday followed by a season-low in points in the 64-60 loss to Michigan State on Thursday.

He was diagnosed with fatigue and dehydration that caused him to feel light-headed. His status for the VCU game is unknown.

Ram Tough

VCU still plays that Shaka Smart-style defense. The Rams were the first team to play No. 6 Baylor within double digits in its 69-61 loss in the second round Thursday, and they trimmed an 11-point second-half deficit to four on KeShawn Curry’s layup with 16 seconds remaining before Baylor clinched it with free throws.

The Rams held Baylor to 40.4 percent shooting from the field after limiting Syracuse to 29.0 percent in a 77-65 first-round victory. Baylor and the Orange were a combined 10 of 38 from three-point range and committed 34 turnovers, 18 by Baylor.

By the Numbers

The Huskies are No. 14 in adjusted efficiency margin in the KenPom ratings and VCU is 110. The teams have met once when UConn posted a 72-61 home victory in the 1988 NIT quarterfinals. The Huskies won the NIT that year.

Both teams will feel the sting of playing their third game in as many days, and it is more difficult to play offense than defense on tired legs.

The pick: VCU +7.5 (-110)
