This is definitely not the way fans of the North Carolina Tar Heels (16-10, 8-17-1 ATS) saw this season unfolding. Following a season in which they just fell short of a seventh NCAA title, choking away a 16-point lead to Kansas in the title game, another championship run was considered inevitable this campaign.
At this point, they’ll need every victory they can get just to qualify for March Madness. On Sunday, February 19th on ESPN, they will go head-to-head with the North Carolina State Wolfpack, (20-7, 12-13-2 ATS) who sit above them in the ACC standings.
Tipoff will go at 1:00 pm ET with many eyes on the nation focusing more on college ball with the NFL season over. Having lost four of their last five, the Tar Heels find themselves 1.5-point underdogs in the North Carolina vs NC State odds.

The odds for this one are extremely tight, despite the Wolfpack having only one blemish on their home court. There has been a bit of a “big brother” theme to this in-state rivalry with the Tar Heels owning the Wolfpack of late.

North Carolina Desperate for Victories
Only five games remain in the regular season for the Tar Heels to make the case for a spot in the NCAA tournament. It’s a shocking turn of events for a squad that was considered a top three favorite in the odds to win March Madness before the season tipped off.
Yes, they lost big man Brady Manek, but Pete Nance transferred from Northwestern to fill that void and almost every other key cog in the lineup returned for another season. However, things just having gone according to plan and the finalists might not even make the field of 68 come mid-March.

At minimum UNC needs to go 4-1 the rest of the way and at least get a few wins in the ACC Tournament. If they can’t do that, then they may have to rely on winning the ACC Tournament to get in.
One person who doesn’t deserve to shoulder any blame is senior Armando Bacot. Averaging a double-double, the Tar Heels high scorer would likely be a top contender in the Wooden Award odds if not for his teams underachieving record this campaign.
NC State Wolfpack Betting Trends
You have to go all the way back to December 2nd to find the only time the Wolfpack lost at home this year. Since then, they’ve won eight in a row as the home side, including victories over conference heavyweights, Miami and Duke. They’ll hope to ride that wave of fan support at PNC Arena to a win against North Carolina on Sunday.
When these two teams last met a month ago, the Wolfpack couldn’t manage the physicality of the Tar Heels attack, sending UNC to the line a whopping 39 times and getting outrebounded 39-25. The Wolfpack were outscored 36-12 on free throws, directly leading to their 11 point defeat.

Without a doubt, NC State has been the better side this year and more than deserve to be favorites in the college basketball odds considering their near perfect home record.
However, when looking at their rivalry, the Tar Heels have absolutely owned them in recent meetings, capturing nine of the last 10 head-to-head clashes. In addition, UNC has also covered in 90% of those last 10 games.

After enjoying a good start to the year and defying the odds set out by sportsbooks, the Wolfpack have faltered against the spread. Since the start of December, they are just 7-11-1 ATS and have covered in just three of their last 11 home games.

So while the straight up record is attractive, this is a not a team that’s been a good pick on the point spread.
The Tar Heels really have no business winning this game, but it’s really put up or shut up time for Hubert Davis’ squad. A loss will severely damage their chances of making the NCAA tournament, so after a six day layoff, our prediction is that a desperate Tar Heels team pulls off the upset and continue to play big brother to the Wolfpack.
