Broncos Go the ExtraMile

Boise State ran its winning streak at ExtraMile Arena to ten games with Wednesday night’s win as senior guard Derrick Alston Jr. led the way with 26 points.

Junior guard Marcus Shaver Jr. was the only other Boise State player to score in double figures with 12 points. Junior forward Mladen Armus had eight points and seven rebounds.

Utah State lost despite getting a career-high 32 points and 10 rebounds from junior center Neemias Queta. Junior guard Marco Anthony added 11 points and Justin Bean finished with 10 for the Aggies, who made just 3 of 16 shots (18.8%) from 3-point range.

Alston on Fire for Broncos

Alston has had his two highest-scoring games of the season in back-to-back outings. He scored 27 last Saturday in a victory over UNLV.

The son of the former NBA player, Alston leads team in scoring with a 17.4 average. He has had at least 20 points in 11 games.

Senior forward Agu Kigab has averages of 12.5 points and 5.8 rebounds. However, he has been held to single digits in scoring in three of the last four games.

Shaver has an 11.6 scoring average and the Portland transfer ended a streak of four straight single-digit games Wednesday. Armus has been strong on the boards all season, averaging 7.7 rebounds.

Queta Season

Queta is averaging 13.5 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots a game – all team-leading figures – and is rated as the MWC’s top player by KenPom.com.

Queta nearly doubled his season-best point total of 18 in Wednesday’s game. He also recorded his eighth double-double of the season.

Anthony is averaging 11.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in his first season since transferring from Virginia. Bean has averages of 10.1 and 7.2

Both Anthony and Bean have scored in double figures in three of their last four games.

Defense is Utah State’s strong point as it is allowing 90.7 points per 100 possessions. That ranks the Aggies 15th in the nation in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency, though Boise State did score the fourth-most points against them in 20 games this season.

Boise State Goes for Sweep

Utah State has won four its previous five games against Boise State before Wednesday’s loss.

This is a pivotal game in the MWC standing for both teams. Colorado State is tied for second with Utah State at 11-3 and San Diego State is in fourth place with a 9-3 record.

Boise State and Utah State are evenly matched but the Broncos are tough on their home court where they seem to, ahem, go the ExtraMile.

Pick: Boise State -1.5 (-110)
