Villanova is an 8-point favorite over Georgetown in the first of their two meetings in the next two weeks. Villanova has dominated the series recently, going 18-3 SU since 2013. The spread record is a different story. The Hoyas are 10-11 ATS in that stretch and have covered the last four.

The Wildcats, 5-9 ATS this season, won both two games last season and are 6-1 SU in the last seven meetings, losing only in the 2021 Big East Tournament when guard Collin Gillespie did not play because of a knee injury. The Hoyas are 5-10 ATS this season.

Villanova Back to Full Strength

Villanova’s season can be neatly separated into two halves — the seven games without highly regarded freshman Cam Whitmore and the seven with him. The WIldcats were 2-5 without Whitmore, who missed time early because of a preseason thumb injury, and are 5-2 since he returned in a limited role against Oklahoma on Dec. 3.

Whitmore, who is averaging 11.7 points and 6.0 rebounds, has been eased into action, playing an average of 22.6 minutes per game. He made his first start in a 68-66 loss to Marquette the last time out on New Year’s Eve, getting 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

The transition from coach Jay Wright and point guard Collin Gillespie to coach Kyle Neptune has not gone smoothly. Returning seniors 6’7 forward Eric Dixon and 6’4 guard Caleb Daniels are averaging a team-high 16.0 points per game, but the Wildcats do not  have a clear leader at point guard with Justin Moore recovering from a torn Achilles. They are being outrebounded, and their 12.0 assists per game are 285th in Division I, although their slower tempo plays into that.

Georgetown in Shambles

The program is in disarray. Georgetown has lost 24 straight Big East games and 29 straight against high-major opponents as speculation about coach Patrick Ewing’s future gains steam. The Hoyas enter the Villanova game after their worst loss of the season, an 80-51 home drubbing by Butler on New Year’s Day. The Hoyas like to push the ball and had a season-low nine turnovers against the Bulldogs, but they negated that efficiency by shooting a season-low 28.8 percent from the field. Ewing has tried five starting lineups for a team built on transfers.

Transfer guards Primo Spears (Duquesne) and Brandon Murray (LSU) lead the team in scoring. Spears is averaging 16.0 points and 4.9 assists per game and Murray is averaging 15.5 points per game and 3.8 assists. UConn transfer Akok Akok is a force in the paint. He had 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots against Butler.

Villanova vs Georgetown Prediction

The Wildcats are coming off close losses to two of the top three teams in the Big East, No. 4 UConn and Marquette, and now play the worst in Georgetown. Villanova may not be Villanova as we knew it, but Georgetown is almost unrecognizable these days. Villanova has its flaws, but it will respond after consecutive conference losses.

  • Pick: Villanova -8 (-110)
  • Season CBK: 13-5 ATS
