Texas is currently the 5th ranked team in the country according to the latest AP Poll, but after falling to Kansas on Monday, a second consecutive defeat would likely cause them to tumble from their current spot. They’ll have their hands full with a West Virginia squad coming off a 76-71 win over 11th ranked Iowa State.

West Virginia Hitting the Over With Regularity

Usually known for their smothering defense under coach Bob Huggins, this Mountaineers squad has morphed into one of the best offensive squads in the entire country.

Commonly known as “Press Virginia” over most of the last decade because of their relentless style on D, Huggins’ current side ranks 17th overall in adjustive offensive efficiency according to the KenPom rankings.

In the college basketball odds, they have surpassed the over/under total 66.7% of the time, about as solid a bet as you could hope for. They’ve toppled the over in four consecutive games including their last outing, a five point victory over conference foes, Iowa State.

The win was West Virginia’s third over a team ranked in the top 15 in the last three weeks. Not many teams draw contact and get to the line like the Mountaineers. They were 26 of 31 from the charity stripe against the Cyclones and are 11th in the country in percentage of points scored from the line.

Texas Longhorns Need Win to Stay With Elite Company

Playing in one of college ball’s best conferences doesn’t do the Longhorns any favors, but they’ll need a victory to remain a strong consideration in the odds to win March Madness.

Facing a team that has shown no issue playing up to their competition, Texas will likely have a very tough battle on their hands with West Virginia. Recently, they have had success against Huggins’ side, including an eight point victory three weeks ago.

The Longhorns have taken five of the last six meetings between the two sides and covered the spread in four of those games. Senior Marcus Carr was the high scorer in that outing, pouring in 23 points for Texas.

Averaging 17 points per game this year, the guard is a longshot contender in the Wooden Award odds, as the country’s top college basketball player. He was recently named to the Naismith Trophy men’s player of the year midseason team.

Carr had 29 points in the Longhorns’ previous contest, but his squad will have to put more emphasis on defense this time around. They allowed 88 points to Kansas in Monday’s loss and their opponents Saturday afternoon boast a better offense than the Jayhawks.

West Virginia vs Texas Prediction

When playing at home, Texas’ offense goes to another level. They average 17 more points when hosting at the Moody Center as opposed to playing on the road. Scoring 85.8 per outing, they have the 24th scoring offense at home in the nation.

They are 7-1-1 hitting the over in their last nine home games. Pair that with an opponent that has gone over the betting line in over 81% of their last 32 road games and we feel like we have a winner in the West Virginia vs Texas odds here.

Our prediction is that these Big 12 rivals engage in a free flowing offensive matchup, so pick the over in the college basketball odds on Saturday.

Pick: Over 151 (-110)
