Roadrunners Betting Analysis

UTSA enters the Frisco Bowl following a crushing 29-14 loss to Tulane that eliminated the Roadrunners from AAC Championship contention. Prior to the loss, Jeff Taylor’s team had strung together seven consecutive victories.

UTSA is led by seventh-year quarterback Frank Harris, who has completed 65% of his passes this season for 2,506 yards and 18 touchdowns with eight interceptions. This will be Harris’ final college game, which brings meaning to an otherwise menial bowl game.

The Roadrunners have a fairly balanced offense, while being average defensively. They average 425 yards and 32 points per contest on offense, while allowing 370 yards and 25 points against on defense. Keep in mind some of these stats are skewed due to Harris missing multiple games.

When it comes to betting trends, the Roadrunners have gone 5-6-1 ATS, while the “under” has cashed in seven of their 11 contests. UTSA is yet to secure a bowl victory despite gaining traction as a program in the AAC.

Thundering Herd Betting Analysis

Marshall comes into the Frisco Bowl following a 35-21 victory over Arkansas State in their last game of the regular season. The Thundering Herd traded wins and losses in the second half of the season, with the lowlight being a 28-0 shutout defeat to South Alabama on Nov. 11.

The Thundering Herd rely heavily on their ground game, led by running back Rasheen Ali who has over 1,000 rushing yards and 14 TDs on the year. Quarterback Cam Fancher has been solid, throwing for nearly 2000 yards with 14 TDs and 9 interceptions.

The Thundering Herd will be turning to freshman QB Cole Pennington, however, as Fancher has since entered the transfer portal. He’s not the only Marshall player opting out, as RB Maurice Jones and TE Sean Sallis are also sitting out the Frisco Bowl.

Defensively, the Thundering Herd leave plenty to be desired, as they are allowing 376 yards and 28.2 points per game. They have been most vulnerable against the run, where they are allowing 158 rushing yards per contest.

In terms of ATS numbers, the Thundering Herd are a disappointing 3-8 ATS this season, with the over-under going 6-6-0. Marshall is 1-5 straight up as a betting underdog and 2-5 against the spread in that role.

UTSA vs Marshall Prediction

Opt-outs are always key when betting on college football bowl games, and that especially holds true for the Frisco Bowl. Marshall has several key bowl opt-outs that have already drastically shifted this betting line. There could be more to follow.

We like targeting UTSA in this spot while the line is sitting under two touchdowns. Marshall’s offense ranked 92nd in yards per play this season, and that was with their starting QB in the fold. They now turn to a freshman against a UTSA secondary that has held all but three opponents to under 250 passing yards.

This is the Frank Harris game, and we’re riding with the experienced QB in his final college start. The Thundering Herd are limping to the finish line, covering the spread in just two of their last nine affairs. The opt outs make them an easy fade in the Frisco Bowl.

  • Pick: UTSA -12 (-110)
