Auburn a 7.5-Point Underdog at Georgia in Week 5 Opening Odds

• No. 4 Georgia opened as a 7.5-point favorite over No. 7 Auburn for a matchup of top 10 teams Saturday (Nov. 3) in Athens

Georgia has opened as a 7.5-point favorite over Auburn in an SEC showdown of top-10 teams set for this upcoming Saturday (Oct. 3) at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga.

Both teams began their seasons with victories this past Saturday (Sept. 26) following slow starts.

No 4 Georgia notched a 37-10 road win at Arkansas, barely failing to cover the 28-point spread. No. 7 Auburn won 29-13 at home over then-No. 23 Kentucky as a 6.5-point favorite.

Bennett Rallies Georgia

Over the summer, Stetson Bennett looked like he was No. 4 on Georgia’s quarterback depth chart.

Two high-profile QBs transferred into the program in USC’s J.T. Daniels and Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman, who later opted out of the season. Redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis also appeared to have leapfrogged Bennett.

Yet Bennett came off the bench to replace an ineffective Mathis in the second quarter Saturday to rally the Bulldogs to victory. With his team down 7-5 despite being heavy favorites, Bennett threw two touchdown passes in the third quarter and finished 20 of 29 for 211 yards.

It will be interesting to see who coach Kirby Smart starts against Auburn.

Will he go with the hot hand in Bennett or revert to Mathis? Could Daniels, who missed the opener while recovering from torn ACL he sustained last season, be a possibility?

Zamir White also showed he should be an able replacement as the featured back for D’Andre Swift, now with the Detroit Lions. White rushed for 71 yards on 13 carries against Arkansas’ defense and his 6-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter put the game away.

Auburn Pulls Away

Like Georgia, Auburn started slowly in its opener before pulling away from Kentucky. The Tigers led just 8-7 at halftime.

Quarterback Bo Nix threw for 233 yards and three touchdowns, all in the second half. Two of TD passes went to Seth Williams.

Playing his first game under new offensive coordinator Chad Morris, Nix completed 16 of 27 passes. He also added 42 yards rushing.

One concerning stat for Auburn, though, is it allowed Kentucky to convert 12 of 19 on third down, including eight of 10 in the first half.

Injury Update

Daniels is the primary name to watch on the Georgia injury list and he was in uniform at Arkansas.

It is also worth keeping an eye on tight end Tre’ McKitty.

The transfer from Florida State underwent arthroscopic knee surgery during training camp. He is not expected to be out much longer and could be a key part of the Tigers’ passing game as soon as this week.

Highly touted Auburn defensive tackle Jay Hardy missed the win over Kentucky with an undisclosed injury. He was seen on the sideline wearing a walking boot while in street clothes.

The opening line seems just about right at a little more than a touchdown. It is hard to foresee the number moving much this week.

If it is does, look for it to shift a bit toward Auburn because of a more settled situation at quarterback.
