After a breakthrough, in-state rivalry win last week, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are still alive for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

A lot of things will need to fall in place, but it begins with them beating the Baylor Bears in the Big 12 Championship on Saturday, Dec. 4.

It’s a rematch of an October 2 tilt, where Oklahoma State handled the Bears in a 24-14 win.

Oklahoma State is a 5.5-point favorite in the title tilt, which kicks off at 12pm ET at AT&T Stadium. The game can be seen live on ABC.

Weather shouldn’t be a factor in Arlington, with temperatures expected to be around 60 degrees, mostly sunny with some cloudy breaks.

Cowboys Bounce Sooners

It took a monumental effort, as Oklahoma State ended a 6-game losing streak vs in-state rival Oklahoma in the Bedlam series.

The 37-33 win ensured that Oklahoma’s run at Big 12 conference title trips stopped at six, and would give the Cowboys their first chance at the crown since 2011.

Starting quarterback Spencer Sanders led the team with 93 yards rushing on 16 carries, while running for an electric score. He overcame a pair of interceptions, connecting on one TD toss and finished with 214 yards passing.

Tay Martin had seven grabs for 87 yards and a TD, while Jaylen Warren ran for 56 yards on 17 totes and a TD.

The win improves Oklahoma State to 11-1 on the year, and keeps them alive in the College Football Playoff, but their path is still considered a long shot.

Winning the Big 12 title is a must, but that’s just the start. They would likely need a combination of Alabama dropping the SEC title game to Georgia, and Michigan falling to Iowa in the Big 10 Championship.

And even after that, the committee would need to still vote them past Notre Dame, who they trail heading into this week.

Bears’ Recent Results

The 10-2 Bears enter this one on a three-game win streak, their latest a 27-24 win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders despite missing starting quarterback Gerry Bohanon, who missed the game with a non-contact leg injury.

Backup Blake Shapen held his own against the Red Raiders, throwing for 254 yards and a pair of scores. Trestan Ebner was Shapen’s big-play target, catching four balls for 118 yards and a score.

Abram Smith was a workhorse in the backfield, carrying 30 times for 117 yards a TD. He’s been one of the strengths of the Baylor offense on the season, rushing for 1,366 on a stout 6.4 yards per carry and 12 touchdowns.

Perhaps the biggest battle to determine the championship is how Oklahoma State’s defense handles Baylor’s run game. They’ve allowed just 93.6 yards rushing per game on the season, which ranks sixth in the nation.

Bears vs Cowboys Previous Meeting

The last time these two teams met, Warren ran for 125 yards and a pair of TD’s, while Martin caught seven passes for 108 yards, as the Cowboys took the battle of then 4-0 teams.

Sanders struggled in that Oct. 2 clash, as he threw three picks, finishing with 182 yards passing and a TD, while also rushing for 76 yards.

The Cowboys’ defense limited Smith to 97 yards — only the fourth time all season he failed to crack the 100-yard plateau. In all, Baylor was held to just 281 total yards in suffering their first loss of the season.

Bohanon did play in that one, but was just 13-for-27 for 173 yards. He also added a TD run.

Baylor vs Oklahoma State Pick

These are two of the premier defenses in the country: Oklahoma State holds teams to just 16.4 points a game, tied for 5th-best in the nation. Baylor is not that far behind, surrendering only 19.4 points per contest, which ranks 17th.

They’re not slouches on offense, either: both are first-page units. Baylor ranks 30th in the nation, pouring in 33.4 points a game, while Oklahoma State is tied for 42nd, at 31.8 per night.

The Cowboys are coming off arguably their worst defensive effort of the year, as they let the Sooners run for 189 yards, while QB Caleb Williams threw three TD passes in defeat.

The loss of Bohanon could limit Baylor’s ability to puncture the defense.

With so much on the line for the Cowboys, look for them to take care of business and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Pick:  Oklahoma State -5.5 (-110)
