Imagine going 10-3, winning a Bowl Game, and having your season be considered a colossal failure. That’s what happened to #4 Clemson last year, and they’re eager for redemption.

The Tigers kick off the 2022 campaign on the final day of the Week 1 slate, as they’ll face ACC rival Georgia Tech Monday in Atlanta.

These two programs played to a 14-8 Clemson victory in 2021, but judging by the college football lines, this year’s matchup won’t be nearly as competitive.

The Tigers opened up as a 19.5-point favorite, but that number has climbed to -23 throughout the week. As of Friday, the betting action is completely one-sided as 80% of the against the spread tickets and 83% of the ATS money is on Clemson. The total meanwhile, opened up at 51 and that’s exactly where it still stands.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8pm ET inside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta, GA, with ESPN providing the broadcast coverage nationwide.

Clemson Tigers Betting Analysis

The primary reason for the Tigers’ underwhelming 2021 season was the play of the offense. Former 5-star recruit DJ Uiagalelei was a major disappointment, throwing for only 9 TDs, while getting picked off 10 times. That was a far cry from his 2020 performance, when he lit the college football world on fire with 781 passing yards and 4 TDs in two starts in place of Trevor Lawrence.

The Tigers finished 95th in the country in 2021 in points per drive, and averaged just 26.3 points per game. If the offense gets off a slow start again, Dabo Swinney won’t have time to be patient. 5-star freshman Cade Klubnik is waiting in the wings, and some experts already believe he’s the more talented player.

Regardless of what happens on that side of the ball on Monday, the Yellow Jackets will be hard pressed to move the chains against Clemson. The Tigers’ defense finished second in the nation in points allowed last year, and this year’s unit could be even better.

All-American hopefuls Bryan Breesee and Myles Murphy are the anchors, while as many as seven defensive linemen are legit 2023 NFL Draft candidates. It’s no surprise they enter the season as the top-ranked defense per SP+.

Georgia Tech Betting Analysis

The Georgia Tech offense finished 12th in the ACC in points per game in 2021, and 93rd in the nation. Dual-threat QB Jeff Sims is back, but there’s a lot of holes elsewhere.

To start, the offensive line has to replace three starters. Their leading rusher Jahmyr Gibbs bolted for Alabama, and their second leading rusher Jordan Mason left for a pro career. Leading receiver Malachi Carter returns, but he averaged just 3.7 catches per contest.

Defensively, the outlook is even more bleak. The Yellow Jackets surrendered 33.5 points per game last season, and ranked last in the nation in pass efficiency defense. They haven’t done nearly enough to upgrade the unit, and will have to make up for the losses of four of their best defensive players – two to the NFL and two to the transfer portal.

Clemson vs Georgia Tech Pick

Nothing about this matchup screams close game. The Tigers have an overwhelming advantage on both sides of the ball and we should expect them to make a statement after a so-called down 2021 season. Uiagalelei has a ton to prove and I’m willing to bet Clemson comes flying out of the gate and bull rushes Georgia Tech.

Don’t forget the Tigers have the fourth shortest National Championship odds, behind only Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia. That’s some pretty elite company.

Pick: Clemson Tigers 1st quarter spread -6.5 (-120)
