The Brian Kelly era at LSU opens up Sunday in New Orleans, as the Tigers host Florida State in a battle of Power 5 programs. There’s plenty of different ways to attack this matchup from a wagering standpoint, but it’s hard to find softer lines than what’s available in the player props market.

LSU is currently a 3.5-point favorite, in a game that features a total of 50. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm ET inside Caesars Superdome, and despite the ridiculous efficiency the Seminoles had rushing the football last week, there’s reason to be bearish on their number one RB’s outlook on Sunday.

Prop #1: Treshaun Ward Under 59.5 Rushing Yards

Florida State racked up over 400 yards on the ground in Week 0 versus Duquesne, led by Treshaun Ward. The sophomore back tallied 127 rushing yards and two scores, averaging 9.07 yards per carry.

Ward was one of three FSU running backs to eclipse the century mark on the ground, while dual-threat QB Jordan Travis also chipped in four carries. One of the reasons the under on Ward’s rushing prop is squarely in play on Sunday is due to the enormous amount of talented runners on the team. The Seminoles will operate a running back by committee approach, while Travis will also steal more than his share of carries. He ran the ball 134 times last year, and every time he keeps the ball for himself that’s one less opportunity for Ward.

Another reason to implement a fade on Ward is the strength of the Tigers’ defensive line. Three of their top d-linemen from 2021 are back, as is stud linebacker Micah Baskerville. They helped LSU limit enemy rushers to just 4 yards per carry last season, and enter 2022 as the 22nd ranked defense per SP+.

Ward eclipsed 59 yards in just three of 12 games last season, and I like him to fall short of that number again versus the Tigers.

Pick: Treshaun Ward Under 59.5 Rushing Yards (-115)

Prop #2: Malik Nabers Over 40.5 Receiving Yards

While it’s true we don’t know who will be the Tigers starting QB on Sunday, we do know who LSU’s top targets are. Kayshon Boutte, a preseason contender for college football’s top receiver honors, will garner the most defensive attention, which should open up plenty of opportunity for Malik Nabers.

Nabers finished his freshman campaign by averaging 60 receiving yards per game over his final six regular season contests. He averaged 14.5 yards per reception and is absolutely electric after the catch. So much so, that the Tigers are having him return kicks this season in addition to his wide receiver duties.

Pick: Malik Nabers Over 40.5 Receiving Yards (-115)

Prop #3: LSU Receiver Strikes First

LSU’s receiving corps is far and away the strength of their offense. It makes sense to target Boutte as the first TD scorer, as he found the end zone nine times in only six 2021 contests.

However, Nabers and fellow wideout Jaray Jenkins are also strong candidates, and come with much more favorable odds. Nabers hauled in four TD as a freshman last season, and can also hit paydirt through the return game. Jenkins meanwhile, caught six touchdowns as a Junior in 2021, including three in his final two contests.

If we expect the Seminoles to shade extra coverage towards Boutte, as they probably should, Nabers and Jenkins should be able to feast in one-on-one matchups. I like taking shots on both of them in the first TD and anytime TD prop markets.

Picks: Malik Nabers First TD (+1300) & Anytime TD (+260), Jaray Jenkins First TD (+1300) & Anytime TD (+250)
