The Brian Kelly era begins at LSU as the Tigers face Florida State at 7:30 p.m. ET Sunday (Sept 4) at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Kelly makes his debut as coach after leaving Notre Dame to replace the fired Ed Orgeron. Florida State is 1-0 after routing Duquesne of the FCS 47-7 in a Week 0 game last weekend.

In a game that will be televised by ABC, LSU is a 3.5-point favorite. The Tigers also opened as 3.5-point picks. Weather won’t be a factor with the game being played indoors.

Florida State Betting Outlook

Florida State had three 100-yard rushers for the first time in school history in the rout of Duquesne.

Treshaun Ward led the way with 127 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. Try Benson had 105 yards and a TD in 11 attempts. Lawrence Toafili rushed 13 times for 101 yards and a score.

The Seminoles finished with 406 yards on the ground as they won a season opener for the first time since 2016.

Quarterback Jordan Travis was efficient on a day Florida State ran the ball at will against the Iron Dukes. He completed 11 of 15 passes for 207 yards.

Travis is showing he can win games for the Seminoles. They are 6-2 in his last eight starts, dating to last season.

Kentron Portier was Florida State’s top receiver with four catches for 84 yards.

Florida State’s defense overwhelmed Duquesne as it forced eight punts and broke up five passes. Safety Jammie Robinson had two of passes defended.

Robinson is one of 16 returning starters for the Seminoles, eight on each side of the ball. Florida State finished 5-7 last season.

LSU Betting Outlook

Kelly is being coy about who will start at quarterback. Most likely, it will be Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels.

He has made the adjustment to Baton Rouge, at least in the classroom.

Last season with the Sun Devils, Daniels connected on 65.4% of his pass attempts for 2,381 yards. However, Daniels had 10 touchdown passes against 10 interceptions.

In his first two seasons in Tempe, Daniels threw for 22 scores and was picked just three times in 422 attempts.

If Kelly decides to pull a surprise, then Garrett Nussmeier will lead the offense. He appeared in four games and threw 57 passes last season as a freshman when LSU went 6-7 and lost in the Texas Bowl to Kansas State.

The Tigers have a big-time playmaker in wide receiver Kayshon Boutte. Despite missing seven games with an injury last season, he had 38 receptions for 509 yards and nine touchdowns.

The strength of LSU’s defense should be on the line with veterans Maason Smith and B.J. Ojulari serving as the anchors. Ojulari had a team-high seven sacks last season and Smith took down the quarterback four times.

The Tigers believe they have the makings of a strong secondary with the addition of transfers Jarrick Bernard-Converse (Oklahoma State) and Greg Brooks Jr. (Arkansas).

Florida State vs LSU Prediction

This is LSU’s first trip to New Orleans since beating Clemson to win the 2019-20 CFP championship. The Tigers’ program has taken a steep fall since that magical night, though, while Florida State could be poised for a breakthrough in Mike Norvell’s third season.

Florida State leads the all-time series 7-2 and won the last matchup 27-16 in 1991 in Baton Rogue as the #1-ranked team in the country. Look for the Seminoles, with a game under their belt, to slip under the number.

Pick: Florida State +3.5 (-113)
