Kansas Believes It Has A Chance

Coming off a dreadful 2-10 season, Kansas already has a chance to equal its win total from last year. The Jayhawks and head coach Lance Leipold want to keep the momentum rolling from last week. In their 56-10 victory over Tennessee Tech, Kansas dominated both sides of the ball holding the Golden Eagles to 190 yards of offense. The Jayhawks amassed 502 yards on 49 plays, but take a step up in competition this week.

Kansas wants to challenge for respectability in the Big 12. They start the season at +25000 in the ACC Title odds, which ranks dead last among all conference teams.

That sentiment has been rare around Kansas football for a long, long time. The last time the Jayhawks had a winning record was in 2008 when they won eight games and the Insight Bowl. Since 2009, Kansas has won no more than three games in any season. The Jayhawks were able to rack up 297 yards against Tennessee Tech.

It is safe to say Kansas will not score 56 points in Morgantown. Although last year, they were able to stay close at home in a 34-28 defeat at the hands of the Mountaineers. Nonetheless, Kansas has managed to win just once versus West Virginia in their history.

On offense, Devin Neal, Daniel Hinshaw Jr., and Sevion Morrison could make a few plays. Their rushing could set up the passing of Jalon Daniels, who can scramble a little bit himself (3 carries, 27 yards, and a touchdown last week).

The defense will be tested by West Virginia, who scored 31 points and 404 yards last week in their loss to Pittsburgh.

Head coach Neal Brown will look to avoid getting upset by Kansas on Saturday. The late loss to Pittsburgh in “The Backyard Brawl” was a tough one to swallow. However, the offense did show some good trends despite a few mistakes.

The Mountaineers displayed a solid grasp of running the ball well. They racked up 190 yards on the ground and scored a couple touchdowns, while JT Daniels tossed 214 yards and a couple scores himself. The problem was the late “Pick Six” which gave Pittsburgh the victory. Again, despite some missteps, West Virginia showed it could hang with the improved Panthers.

Can Brown and the offense make fewer of these critical mistakes? Being at home helps, but the timeouts were definitely because of a lack of communication. Bryce-Ford Wheaton will be Daniels’ go-to receiver and could be quite the offensive threat against Kansas. The Jayhawks may not have an answer there. Again, the question with West Virginia will be their pass defense, which yielded over 300 yards in their opener.

West Virginia’s projected NCAAF win total of 5.5 is pretty accurate. Given their schedule, five or six wins is possible.
