Surprising Indiana looks to end a long losing streak against a Big Ten rival when it hosts Michigan at 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.

Indiana has not beaten Michigan since 1987, losing 24 in a row to the Wolverines.

However, Indiana is off to a 2-0 start, ranked 13th and tied with Ohio State for the lead in the Big Ten’s East Division. No. 23 Michigan is 1-1 in the pandemic-delayed season.

Lopsided Series History

Michigan leads the overall series, which dates back to 1900, 69-9. The Wolverines have won 39 of the last 40 games.

However, Indiana has played Michigan tough in Bloomington in recent years.

Michigan escaped with a 48-41 win in double overtime as 12-point favorites in 2017. The teams went to overtime again two years later, and the Wolverines prevailed 27-20, pushing as seven-point picks.

Yet Michigan rolled to a 39-14 victory last season at Memorial Stadium, easily covering the 9.5-point spread.

Shea Patterson led Michigan with 366 yards passing and five touchdowns. However, his eligibility has been used up, and Joe Milton is now the Wolverines’ quarterback.

Also gone is Nico Collins, who had six receptions for 165 yards and three scores.

Long Time Coming for IU

Being ranked 13th is pretty much uncharted territory for Indiana, a program that has not won the Big Ten title since 1967.

Indiana was last ranked in the Top 15 in 1988. The Hoosiers have not cracked the Top 10 since 1969.

Furthermore, Indiana’s 36-35 overtime victory at home over Penn State in its opener marked the first time it had beaten a Top 10 team in 33 years.

Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has not put up eye-popping statistics in a season in which college football has been dominated by offense. He has completed just 58.1 percent of his passes for 408 yards and four touchdowns and one interception.

However, Penix already assured him a spot in Indiana lore against Penn State. His diving two-point conversion attempt in overtime gave the Hoosiers the win.

In a 37-21 win at Rutgers last Saturday, Penix was 17 of 26 for 238 yards and three touchdowns. He has had no picks as the Hoosiers covered as 11-point favorites.

Penix has also formed a connection with Whop Philyor, who has 10 catches for 173 yards and one TD.

Harbaugh Facing Heat

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is under fire after his team took a bad loss last Saturday, 27-24 at home to rival Michigan State as a 21.5-point choice.

Harbaugh has compiled a 48-19 record during six seasons at his alma mater since leaving the San Francisco 49ers. However, the knock on the former Wolverines quarterback is that he can’t win the big game.

Michigan is 0-5 against arch-rival Ohio State under Harbaugh. They are also a combined 8-13 against the Buckeyes, Michigan State, Penn State and Wisconsin.

The Wolverines opened the season with a resounding 49-24 victory at Minnesota. Milton passed for 225 yards and one touchdown in his first career start while guiding an offense with 478 total yards.

While Milton had 300 yards through the air last week against Michigan State, the Wolverines scored on just four of 12 drives and were 7 for 17 on third down conversions.

That leaves the question of whether the opening-night offensive performance was more a product of playing against a porous Minnesota defense that was gashed for 45 points by lowly Maryland last weekend.

Granted, it is just two games into the season. Yet this feels like Indiana’s year – at least until the Hoosiers play Ohio State in Columbus on Nov. 21.

Look for the Indiana to pull the mild upset, stay unbeaten and end its long skid against Michigan.

The pick: Indiana ML +130
