Georgia as the new favorites at +180 odds looks like the safe bet here. While USC at +1200 and Michigan at +2500 are also juicy contenders. Penn State made the biggest leap all the way up to +6000 in the National Championship odds after Week 3.

Can Penn State Really Contend for a National Championship?

If beauty points were awarded for wins in college football, Penn State would have scored on Saturday. A 41-12 win against a game SEC opponent will do that. A 29-point win at Auburn will make national football fans take notice. Penn State wasn’t just good against a downtrodden Auburn Tigers team, the Nittany Lions were utterly dominant on both sides of the football.

The Nittany Lions’ offense gained 477 yards, averaged 6.3 yards per carry, and 10.1 yards per pass attempt. Freshman running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kayton Allen combined for 176 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Defensively, Penn State forced four turnovers and harassed Tigers quarterback T.J. Finley all afternoon. More importantly, Penn State showed the Big Ten is every bit as good as the talent in the SEC. Now at +6000 in the National Championship odds, Penn State is an intriguing longshot bet.

Georgia Looks Ready to Repeat

If the National Championship game was played tomorrow, few would bet against the Georgia Bulldogs. Kirby Smart’s men continued a comfortable September by flattening South Carolina.

Georgia showed why they jumped to number 1 with an easy road win in their SEC opener. Quarterback Stetson Bennett IV continues to be a revelation. Bennett completed 16 of 23 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns, while adding another score on the ground. According to the broadcast, he did all this while throwing up sick on the sidelines. It wasn’t Michael Jordan’s flu game, but the Georgia Bulldogs will be unstoppable if Stetson Bennett continues to play like this.

For the season, Bennett is completing 74% of passes and averaging 11 yards per attempt. He is shooting his way up the Heisman trophy odds for a reason. On Saturday, no Georgia player rushed for over 36 yards, and the team cruised to an easy victory over an SEC opponent. This team has looked phenomenal through the first three weeks.

Other National Championship Odds Notes

Oklahoma State’s blowout over Arkansas Pine-Bluff has moved their odds from +10000 to +8000 in the National Championship odds. This team has legit talent on both sides of the football. With the continuity of Mike Gundy’s staff, Oklahoma State could be a sneaky good National Championship bet.

Meanwhile, Michigan just keeps blowing out inferior opponents. Wolverines running back Blake Corum tied a school record on Saturday with five rushing touchdowns in a 59-0 victory over UConn. Yet, Michigan’s National Championship odds remained stagnant at +2500. Likewise, the USC Trojans trounced Fresno State 45-17 at the Coliseum. The Trojans are off to a blistering start with 178 points scored through three games, the most for a USC team since 2005. At +1200 this dangerous USC Trojan team may be the best value bet on the board.
