North Carolina is an Offensive Juggernaut

North Carolina scored 42 of their 49 points in the first half of last week’s victory over Western Carolina. The game marked the sixth time the Tar Heels have eclipsed the 40 point plateau this season. They are 5-1 this season in games where they have hit that mark.

Quarterback Sam Howell was only needed for the first half of the game with the Catamounts, but he was impressive in the limited action. He threw just 23 passes, completing 20 of them for 287 yards and two touchdowns.

He also ran for 41 yards including a 30-yard jaunt on a 3rd and fourth play in the first quarter. Howell has been a top quarterback in the nation this season and he looked the part last Saturday even if it was against an FCS school.

Ten different Tar Heels attempted a rush in the game but none had more success than Michael Carter. Carter shredded the Western Carolina defense to the tune of 73 yards and three touchdowns on only eight carries. He also added a reception for six yards in the massacre.

Hurricanes Are Rolling

Saturday’s game marked the first time the Hurricanes had taken the field since a narrow win over Virginia Tech on November 14th. Any questions about form were quickly answered as Miami cruised to a 21-0 halftime lead. The Hurricanes have now won their last five games and appear to be a team to take seriously.

Miami’s quarterback D’Eriq King turned in another dominant performance against the hapless Blue Devils. He was able to throw for three touchdowns while also adding one on the ground. It was the 10th time in his collegiate career he has thrown for at least three touchdowns while also running for at least one.

King had no shortage of targets in this one. Mike Harley made the most of his two catches as he went for 105 yards and a score which came on an 89 yard reception in the third quarter. Donald Chaney and Brevin Jordan both chipped in with four receptions with Jordan reaching the end zone on one of his.

Best Betting Angle

The weather for this game is absolutely perfect for points. The forecast calls for temperatures to be in the mid 70s with very little wind and almost no chance of precipitation. While weather is not everything, it is a concern when betting an outdoor game with a total approaching 70.

The Hurricanes offense looked scary good against Duke with little to no rust after the long layoff. The Duke Blue Devils are no one’s idea of a good defense but neither are the Tar Heels. So far this season, they have given up 40 plus points in a game three times to offenses that are no where near the caliber of the Hurricanes. Miami should be able to move the ball with relative ease in this game.

On the flip side, Miami is only giving up 22 points per game on the season but a closer look at their schedule offers reasons as to why. They have not seen a quarterback on the same level as Sam Howell since Trevor Lawrence embarrassed them back in October. Howell is clearly not Lawrence but he is more than capable of moving the ball.

Typically in college football, it takes both teams to contribute to an over higher than 60 and it is reasonable to think we have a good environment here. Miami is ranked 21st in the country in plays per game while North Carolina sits at 44th. The pace is right for this game to be an absolute shootout with both teams having a chance to put up 40 plus points.

Pick: Over 67 (-110)
