Mustangs Betting Analysis

The SMU Mustangs enter Friday night college football boasting a 4-2 record and a decent 3-3 mark against the spread. They are coming off a 31-10 win over East Carolina in which quarterback Preston Stone threw for 276 yards and 3 touchdowns.

SMU has strung together four straight victories following a 28-11 loss to Oklahoma on September 9th. Their passing attack has played a key role, with Stone tossing for 1,191 passing yards and 11 TDs with four interceptions so far. The Mustangs are averaging 33 points per game, which is third in the AAC.

Defenviely, the Mustangs have been arguably the best team in the American conference this season, allowing an average of 17 points and 311.3 yards per contest. If they gave a potential weakness, it could be their run defense, which is allowing 128 YPG.

Owls Betting Analysis

The Temple Owls aren’t enjoying the same type of success as their Friday night opponent, as Stan Drayton’s team enters this game with a lackluster 2-5 record. Temple is coming off a 45-14 loss against North Texas in which QB Quincy Patterson threw 3 interceptions.

You have to go all the way back to September 7th vs UMass for Temple’s last victory, as the team is riding a four-game losing streak. To make matters worse for bettors, the Owls have yet to cover the spread in a single conference game this season.

Quarterback Patterson has thrown for 773 passing yards and two TDS with eight interceptions, while running back Edward Saydee has arguably been the team’s MVP, rushing for 403 yards and six scores on the ground.

While the Temple offense is only averaging 21.9 points per game, the defense hasn’t much much better, giving up an average of 439 yards and 36 points per game. The Owls’ rush defense, in particular, has been miserable, allowing 207 yards per contest.

SMU vs Temple Prediction

This is a clear mismatch featuring one of the worst teams in the AAC hosting one of the conference’s top teams. However, the Owls enter this one with their highest receiving handicap since their Week 4 clash against the Miami Hurricanes in which they were 22.5-point underdogs.

It’s hard to see the Temple offense having much success against this SMU defense, with the Mustangs ranking top-2 in the conference in defensive touchdowns, passing yards allowed, scoring defense and total defense.

Temple’s scoring offense ranks an abysmal 119th in the country and scored seven total points in games against Miami and Rutgers. Our best bet is the over/under Temple team total, which is being offered at 17.5 points right now at FanDuel.

  • Pick: Temple Team Total Under 17.5 Points (-125)
