Tennessee Volunteers Betting Analysis

After knocking off a ranked program in three consecutive weeks, including #6 Alabama, Tennessee had a gimme in Week 8. They beat up on UT-Martin 65-24, sitting down starting QB Hendon Hooker and other starters after just one half.

Hooker, a top-two contender in the Heisman Trophy odds, threw for 276 yards and three scores, leading the Vols to 52 points in the opening 30 minutes.

Hooker’s performance followed up a 5 TD outing against ‘Bama, and his 190.8 passer rating ranks second in the nation behind only C.J. Stroud.

Tennessee leads the country in points per game and total offense, averaging 50.1 points and 571 yards per contest.

Jalin Hyatt caught two more touchdowns versus UT-Martin giving him an FBS-high 12 scores on the season, while the junior is one of only nine wideouts with over 750 receiving yards.

Defensively, the Tennessee starters yielded only 7 points before giving away to backups, but that side of the ball is not their specialty. They rank 40th in defensive efficiency per SP+, and 35th in scoring defense. Alabama lit them up for 569 yards and 49 points in Week 7, while both Florida and Pitt hung an average of 30 points on them in their two meetings.

Kentucky Wildcats Betting Analysis

Kentucky enters play fresh off a 27-17 victory over #16 Mississippi State. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Wildcats, and it was their defense that stood tall. They held the Bulldogs to just 225 total yards, after Mississippi came into the game averaging over 40 points per outing during a three-game winning streak.

Kentucky ranks 6th in defensive efficiency per SP+, and second in the SEC in scoring defense. They forced two turnovers from the Bulldogs, and held them to just 2.2 yards per rush.

Offensively, the Wildcats rank 49th per SP+, but do feature a potent rushing attack. Chris Rodriguez led the way last Saturday with 196 yards and 2 TD, clearing 125 rushing yards for the second straight week.

Starting QB Will Levis, a projected first-round pick, returned from a one-game absence due to a foot injury, and while he wasn’t perfect, he did throw a key third-quarter TD pass to put Kentucky up for good.

The Wildcats scored only 14 points in an upset loss to South Carolina without Levis, so his presence on Saturday will be key for Kentucky’s offensive prospects.

Tennessee vs Kentucky Prediction

This is a potential trap game for the Vols with a massive showdown versus #1 Georgia looming next week. Kentucky will be one of the toughest defenses Tennessee has faced all season, and the Wildcats will do everything they can to grind this game to a halt.

Kentucky ranks 104th in pace, and will likely deploy a run-heavy game plan to keep the ball out of Hooker’s hands.

The Wildcats have excelled as underdogs this season, covering in all three instances where they’ve been catching points. They won two of those contests outright, and while their offense is by no means elite, it should be good enough to help them keep this matchup within two scores.

Pick: Kentucky Wildcats +13 (-105)
