For the third straight season (and sixth time overall), the Texas Longhorns will kick off Big 12 play against the Texas Tech Raiders.
They’ll hope to remain perfect against their in-state rivals in such a scenario.
The 22nd-ranked Longhorns hit the road for the first time this season, to face a Red Raiders team that’s 2-0 at home, but coming off a loss to 16th-ranked NC State in Week 3.
It all gets underway Saturday (September 24) at 3:30pm ET from Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock. You can watch it live on ESPN.

The latest college football odds have the ‘Horns as 7-point road favorites, with a total set at 59.5. Texas Tech is a +227 underdog to win on the moneyline.
Weather won’t be a factor Saturday, with clear, sunny skies and 82-degree weather at kickoff.
Longhorns Betting Outlook
Even with a spell of injuries after their loss to Alabama, Texas showed the resolve of a top team, hammering UTSA 41-20 last week.
Without starting QB Quinn Ewers (collarbone), the Longhorns relied on the run game, and Bijan Robinson delivered.

The 6-foot, 220-pound junior carried 20 times for 183 yards and three touchdowns, the first time he’s cracked the century mark this season. Robinson went for 100+ rushing yards six times last year, en route to an 1,127 yard, 11 TD campaign.
Hudson Card didn’t need to do too much but game manage, completing 15-of-23 passes for 161 yards and a TD with no interceptions. Reports indicate that Ewers has been practicing with the ‘Horns this week, but no official word yet on who will start Saturday.

Texas’ defense did their part as well against UTSA, registering five tackles for loss, four QB hurries, one sack and a Jahdae Barron 44-yard pick-six, giving Texas its first double-digit lead of the game at the end of the third quarter.
Their defense is allowing just 16.7 points per game, good for 32nd in the NCAA.
Red Raiders Betting Outlook
After hanging 63 on Murray State and going to double overtime to down the then-25th ranked Houston Cougars, the Red Raiders got stopped 27-14 at North Carolina State.

Their biggest concern has to be the quarterback position, where Tyler Shough is still on the shelf with a shoulder injury suffered in Week 1. Despite Texas Tech averaging 374 yards passing per game (4th in FBS) backup Donovan Smith has struggled with turnovers while facing relentless pressure.

In the Houston game, Smith overcame three interceptions and six sacks to pull out the win. The formula failed against the Wolfpack, as Smith tossed two more interceptions and was sacked four times. He’s thrown three TD’s to five picks in the last two games.
The expectation is third-stringer Behren Morton will get some snaps in if Smith struggles again Saturday.

Fortunately, their defense looks stout and may be able to keep them in games. The Red Raiders are currently first in the Big 12 and ninth in the NCAA allowing just 2.3 yards per carry. They’ve yet to allow a run of 20+ yards.
Tech has also pushed into the backfield at a tremendous rate: their 23 tackles for loss ranks 22nd in the nation.
Texas vs Texas Tech Pick
These teams have lit up scoreboards early on, with both schools inside the top-45 in scoring. The Longhorns are putting up 37.3 points per game, while the Red Raiders are hanging 36.7 on the opposition.
Saturday will mark the 13th time Texas opens conference play on the road, sporting a 9-3 mark, with two straight wins and nine of the last 10. They have dominated this series, winning 11 of the last 13 matchups, including last year’s 70-35 evisceration, scoring 10 TD’s.

Robinson shredded the Tech D last year, running for 137 yards on 18 totes, and also catching a TD pass.
As much as Texas Tech’s defense has improved in 2022, the Longhorns are already 3-0 against the spread this season, and 9-3 ATS vs the Red Raiders in the last 12.
